Reasons Why Every Young Woman Should Go Through Recruitment

By going through recruitment, I was lucky to find a home in Alpha Gamma Delta, and any of you could be just as lucky as I was to find a home in Greek Life.

Reasons Why Every Young Woman Should Go Through Recruitment

If you or a friend are looking for a great adventure for the new year, go through recruitment. If you are lonely searching for a few friends and a family, go through recruitment. If you are hungry and just want some good food, go through recruitment. There is a huge list of reasons to go through recruitment, and all you really need is one. Going through recruitment is one of the best experiences that I have had in college. It has created a world of opportunity and given me a family full of love and support. If there are any doubts or any belief that sororities are not a good place to be, I say they are wrong. Sure they may not be for everyone, but going through recruitment does not mean a commitment and you could find a home. I went through recruitment the winter semester of my freshman year, and it was one of the best decisions I have made while at college.

The people. There are so many great women involved in sororities that you may never meet otherwise. People from every major and so many other circles and activities join sororities and create a new level of family. I’ve met so many people that I never would have met any other way. My roommate is a physics major who I may never have decided to room with if we weren’t sisters. If you’re having roommate or friend issues right now and really need to branch out, this is the perfect opportunity to meet a ton of great girls in a short period of time.

The possibilities and connections. The few days of recruitment are very intense, but within those days a sea of possibilities opens up. One connection can be made that can impact the rest of your life. The sisters and the foundations you could be associated with are with you for life. Through AGD I have connections to people all over the country and in Canada. I was wearing an AGD hat at work over the summer and had three alumna come up to me and say hello and talk to me about their experiences as Alpha Gams. There are endless possibilities.

Fun events. There are numerous amounts of cool activities and events that you can do as a part of a sorority. Recruitment events are a ton of fun, but once you start sisterhood events, or have formal the real fun begins. The opportunities to have a great time while spending time with incredible friends who are like family are irreplaceable.

The food. Every sorority has a different specialty, and kicks butt at it. Cake balls, fruit pizza, jello popcorn, plus the rest of the munchies they have. It’s a never ending buffet. The only bad part is while you are trying to stuff your face, everyone is trying to talk to you. If you are already sick of the cafeteria food and would love to get some great goodies for a few hours, we know how to make good desserts.

Finding a home. I knew many of the people in my sorority before I went through recruitment and had visited the house several times, but I still kept an open mind about where I wanted to go. However, through the recruitment process, I found a place where I felt completely accepted for who I am. I walked into the house and felt at home. It felt right and I knew exactly where I belonged.

To anyone with any doubts about going through recruitment, please just try it. Other than a few hours of your time there is nothing to lose, and a whole world of things you could gain. By going through recruitment, I was lucky to find a home in Alpha Gamma Delta, and any of you could be just as lucky as I was to find a home in Greek Life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
