I know that it’s annoying to always hear your roommate telling you to turn the lights off or to be doing work and overlook the fact that it’s already 3:00 a.m. again. Regardless of how much you plan to go to sleep early and insist that you’ll wake up early to continue what you started, there are some huge positives to being a night owl.
1. You're probably more curious, considering that you might stay up researching random things like how to speak French or the life of a caterpillar. Curious people tend to learn more, and be more knowledgeable.
2. You get quiet time. Those few extra hours that you spend awake while everyone else is sleeping can be therapeutic without the constant buzz of the busy world surrounding you.
3. While mornings can be rough, it’s a good reason to drink coffee. Let’s be real here, who doesn’t love coffee?
4. Your best ideas can come to you late at night. Sometimes, we can spend the entire day stressed about making a decision when, in reality, all that we needed was some peace and quiet to decide.
5. You could potentially be more productive. Maybe you find it hard to get a bunch of work done in the morning, but, at the end of the day, the pressure is off, so you get more done.
6. Night owls appear to have a higher IQ.
7. You might find yourself to be more creative than your friends who always go to sleep early. Being creative is a wonderful thing.
8. Night owls can stay mentally alert for more hours when compared to early risers.
So, constantly staying up late isn’t such a bad thing after all. Of course, going to bed early might be essential to getting up early for work or class. While it’s important to get your eight hours in, staying up can be relaxing, enlightening, and productive. These are some pretty great advantages to doing something that society encourages you not to. That being said, I would take being a night owl over being an early bird any day.
