Every college student has experienced the common disorder called “Netflix Binge Syndrome.” I am a fellow sufferer. I was self-diagnosed at the beginning of my freshman year. My life has been impaired ever since.
I can remember days when NBS wasn’t a part of my everyday life. The sun seemed brighter. Maybe because I actually saw it a lot more. The air felt fresher. Maybe because it wasn’t being consistently breathed from my bed. Food tasted different. Maybe because most of it wasn’t out of a bag. However, I don’t see an end to this suffering coming anytime soon.
I also remember the moment I first felt the NBS set in. It was when I watched my first episode of "Grey’s Anatomy" … It changed my life forever.
(Warning: Spoilers may be present.)
Reasons Why "Grey’s Anatomy" will Inflict Netflix Binge Syndrome:
1. The show starts off with a plot twist.
The first episode starts off with Meredith Grey waking up from a one-night stand with some random but extremely attractive guy. Then, he turns out to be her superior at work… If that doesn’t say “awkward”, I don’t know what does.
2. The plot twists just keep happening.
Not only does the guy she ends up sleeping with end up being her superior at work, but they end up dating. Then, turns out he is actually married ... Then, they break up (obviously). Then, they get back together. Then, they get post it note married. Then, they get for real married. Then, they kill him off … (I mean, really? That one isn’t really a plot twist because we all saw it coming. But, seriously Shonda Rhimes?)
3. It gets to where it’s a guessing game of “Who will they kill off next?”
When it was sweet little George, we all mourned. Once again with the plot twists, we all expected it to be Izzy, but George was snatched away while we were paying too much attention to her. It hurt a lot. But, after the hospital shooting episode, we began to just expect people to drop like flies… Until sweet little Lexi. Once again, we all mourned.
4. Meredith’s half-sisters end up being like collecting rare Pokémon.
We have found out that she has one that had a baby at the hospital, one that was a genius with a photographic memory, one that isn’t actually her sister but her sister-in-law that she stayed close to after she became widowed, and she now has a mixed one!
5. The show evolves with and follows the beginning interns.
In the beginning of the show, the main focus was drama within the intern group. If a person got mad at another, the beef would be shown throughout a long number of episodes until a solution was brought up. For example, the episode(s) when George as mad at Meredith for crying during sex with him … Yeah, you forgot about that awkwardness huh? Anyways, he stayed mad at her for like five episodes until a solution was brought up.
Now the focus is still on Meredith, Alex, their equals, and superiors. Anything lower than them gets forgotten. Such as when Edwards and Wilson got mad at Penny for applying for the grant that would let her work in New York for some time without tell them. They were mad for the end of that episode and then friends with her by the next one again.
6. They use real medical cases.
All the way from the pregnant man to the tiger man, all of the medical cases are ones that were actually documented in real life. Of course, not all of them were in America let alone in Seattle. But, it’s still interesting that they use real life situations.
7. They leave you asking a lot of questions.
There are a lot of things that aren’t clear and seem like they will never be clear. Like, why did Karev give Pierce a longing look after telling her about all of the things about herself a guy should like? It was during season ten or eleven and it was when she wasn’t looking and he and Jo were having problems … Doesn’t that seem like it would turn into something?
Or, why do we never hear about Christine anymore? She was Meredith’s person! She should still be relevant.
Or, my personal favorite, what in the world happened to hernia guy? He was in one of the middle episodes of season twelve. He was that guy that when he sneezed, his belly inflated with a huge hernia. You never find out how they treated that or why it was that big!! I mean, some of us would like to know.
These are just a few of the contagious qualities that can leave any poor college student with NBS after watching "Grey’s Anatomy." Please share this with your friends and family so they can all be aware of Netflix Benge Syndrome. It’s truly devastating.
And if you are a sufferer yourself, don’t worry, it will get better. You’ll find yourself getting out of bed ready to find something to with your time. Well, that is that you will find yourself wanting to get out of bed to get a job because you’ll have to pay your Netflix payment. But, it is a start. And don’t let anyone push you until you are ready.
