Things I Have Realized In Being The Oldest Sibling

Being the oldest sibling can be both rewarding and tiring. It's fun, though, if you make it.

Things I Have Realized In Being The Oldest Sibling

Being the older sibling definitely has its perks. You were the first born. Nothing can take that away from you. Chances are you got the most special treatment since you were the first child your parents ever handled, meaning they were probably extremely cautious with you. You were the only child at some point (whether it was 2 years old or 10) so you know what having a sibling and not having a sibling feels like. Although it can be annoying to be the oldest at times, it is so fun. Over the years, you start to realize some things.

1. No one can make fun of your baby brother or sister and get away with it

Unless you're the one making fun of them, of course. If anyone else tries to go near them, it is over. You make not look like it, but you can be intimidating when this happens. You hate the thought of anyone being mean to them or hurting them. However, you can't completely shelter them from the cruel world.

2. You have had fun making them tag along on things they didn't want to do

Whether it be forcing them to play barbies with you or to let you put makeup on them, chances are you have forced them to do something they weren't the most excited about. Although, they may act like they hate it, but at a younger age, they probably do have fun with it.

3. You have too much fun embarrassing them in public

What fun would it be if you let them go out in public with you without you embarrassing them in the slightest? I mean obviously, you have to pinch their cheeks and say "hey sweet little baby" in a mocking voice. You're their older sibling, what else are you supposed to do?

4. Your younger siblings never seem as old as they actually are

Chances are, they were born when you were anywhere from 3 to 10 years old. They will always be a little baby in your eyes. They got to age 5 and you thought "they can't be as old as I was when they were born." They got to age 13 and you thought "there's no way they're a teenager." They got to age 15 or 16 and you couldn't believe the fact that they were old enough to drive themselves around now. You think, "are they really letting 12-year old's drive these days?" before remembering that they are a lot older than you think.

5. You have all the room to give advice to them

Although they may not want it, you can give them advice on pretty much everything they're going through since you went through it yourself. It makes you happy knowing you can save them some of the heartaches you went through but it pains you when they didn't actually listen to the advice you gave.

6. You boss them around like they are your own children

Whether this happens while you're playing games or it happens when you're out shopping together, you are going to boss them around at some point. Of course, since they're your sibling they hate this bossiness from you and tell your parents which result in you getting in trouble.

7. Sometimes you even get asked if they're your children

I know this has happened many times for me. Sure, if your little sibling is only two or three years younger than you, they don't look that much younger. My little brothers are five years younger than me though so I have been asked many times if they're my kids.

8. No matter how much your siblings annoy you, you will always love them

There's just something about them that you can't not love. Granted, they are your family so you're kinda obligated to love them, but you realize they actually aren't that bad after all.

Younger siblings are pretty cool and shouldn't be taken for granted. Love on them all you can.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
