MTV's annual Video Music Awards (VMAs) are packed with great artists, talent, and celebrities, but this year it was packed with something else - a powerful message. If you missed it, check it out and see what message swept the audience and nation. Within minutes, hundreds of thousands of people took to social media to express their feelings of shock, love, and happiness.
Logic released his song, "1-800-273-8255", in late April 2017, but it wasn't until a minute and a half into this song until a light bulb kicked on in my head. I've been jamming out to this song since early this year and didn't realize the song title was the National Suicide Hotline number, which was plastered across the screen.
The performance was absolutely stunning. Nearing the end of the song, there were people scattered on the catwalk through the crowd, as well as joining Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid on stage. The members who joined the performers on stage were wearing shirts that said, "You are not alone." They were approximately 50 or so people that are suicide survivors or family members of those who committed suicide.
It really hit me at this point, the song that I've been jamming to for most of the year isn't just a lyrics and notes thrown together. This song was written on a personal experience. It was written to reach out to those in dark places and help them find the light. It's a helping hand to those who may not know they need it.
Not that the song wasn't catchy or didn't have a meaning beforehand, but now the song is something that means the world.
The passing of a family member or friend isn't easy, and it is exponentially worse when they commit suicide. Once you hear that, questions start shooting through your head, 'Did I see any warning signs? Is there something I could have done? I knew I should have done this differently.' The list goes on and on.
This song is the outcry of many for help and it truly is one of the best lyrical creations of 2017.
