From singing in the shower to double dipping the chip dip, we all have those things we do in the comfort and privacy of our own homes, cars, showers, and friends' houses that we wouldn’t (probably shouldn’t) do in public.
Some time ago someone told us that burping in the grocery store and taking our shoes off while out at dinner was unacceptable. Then somewhere along our paths of growing up we learned that it’s best not to sing at top volume while listening to music in our headphones and that we probably shouldn’t break out in random dance while listening to music in said headphones.
What’s so nice about all of these things is that even though we’ve been told not to do them, all of us do them, whether we want to admit it or not. Perhaps it’s the not being told to do these things that makes them so awesome. Or maybe it’s the fact that we take pride in being the weird, rule-breakers that we are. I mean, come on, we all know that liberating feeling that comes with letting out a nice big burp, even us ladies.
We also all know the joy that comes with nailing a new dance move that you invented all on your own in the middle of your kitchen, singing at the top of your lungs at a pitch that shouldn’t be legal and potentially worrying your neighbors.
These moments remind us of the times we put on an entire theatrical performance in front of our bathroom mirror, with our stuffed animals pretending to be paparazzi. No one could come close to beating your performances in that bathroom.
Those times have nothing on the time we acted like old people from England who could hardly walk just because we felt like that was the right thing to do at that given moment.
Beneath all of our polished manners and socially acceptable clothing (sometimes questionable) are really a bunch of weird people who talk to themselves or animals on a regular basis.
We are the people who spend the day talking in southern accents just because. We are the people who do the robot and talk on our fake phones when "2 Phones" comes on the radio. We are the people who do the sprinkler and lawn mower for fun because we genuinely enjoy those dance moves that aren’t really dance moves.
We smile in sweet remembrance of all of the times we laughed way too hard at our own jokes (the jokes that only we find funny) and we pride ourselves on the deep and meaningful conversations we’ve held with inanimate objects. In fact, those actually happen to be some of the best conversations we’ve had.
The reason we do these things and, more importantly, the reason we enjoy doing these things is because dancing in the kitchen really is better than dancing anywhere else. There are a variety of microphone options, optimal space, and the comfort of knowing that no one, besides possibly our animals or anyone who happens to walk in, will judge us. Not to mention the number of people who have done the exact same thing and have loved every single moment of it.
