Dad, Daddy, Daddio, Fatah. Whatever you want to call him he is probably the man sponsoring your college experience, along with the rest of your life. And let's be honest, your sponsor should be able to experience what he is paying for, at some point. without any rules or responsibilities. For that reason, Dad's Weekend was invented.
Fair warning -- your Dad may roll into town and think that he can keep up with you and your drinking habits. But he has yet to realize that every time you tell him you are going to the library tonight, that Library is actually a bar. So although the man may be double your size and think that he is an experienced drinker, he has no clue what he is in for during Dad's Weekend.
Tip one, to help the guy out -- don't get your usual mixed drinks because, well, that's just asking for a disaster. Your dad will most likely try to keep up with you and then although he will have the night of his life, his old age does not allow him to deal with hangovers well.
That's where the best part comes in -- brunch. Living on a college budget doesn't usually allow for meals out, and when you are going to eat out it's most likely to get chicken nuggets from McDonalds. But when Dad is in town, the possibilities are endless. Not only do you get to go to brunch to help cure his hangover, but if you are lucky you get lunch and dinner, too! Before Dads Weekend, you cannot even remember the last time you ate three meals in a day.
The next best part of Dad's Weekend is the fact that dads tend to have a way to get information out of your friends. He buys them dinner and some drinks, and they word vomit the whole night about who they like and your friends secretly tell your dad who they are in love with, while you simultaneously work as a decoy so that you are able to avoid ever being questioned about your love life.
You will most likely participate in some sort of activity, like a baseball game where your dad is able to meet other dads and they bond, or talk about jokes and what not. They act like they are frat brothers and tell stories about their nights, or their college experience, and how great it is to be back. But their stories will always end with some comment about not knowing how these kids do it these days.
By the end of the weekend you will have posted at least five Facebook photos and checked in at every place you went to. Facebook pictures, although a dying thing in our generation, are the coolest thing any parent could have. So when you post a picture and tag your dad in it you are bound to get at least 50 likes, which ultimately boosts your social media status.
As the weekend comes to an end, you drop your dad off at the airport waiting for his return next year. Dad's Weekend creates memories and fun experiences that your friends talk about for the rest of the year, as well as memories you share with your Dad for the rest of your life.
