Twitter literally exploded when a picture of a young girl captioned "Nothing but respect for my president" went viral. She had apparently spent her time on the Hollywood Walk of Fame cleaning President Trump's Hollywood star that had previously been defaced. She is pictured kneeling beside her work and another picture is her cleaning it with what appears to be a cleaning wipe.
What garnered even more traction was the response of another girl after her. She tweeted a picture of the star now disgraced once again, with the caption "@ the girl who cleaned Trump's star." She is also pictured laughing while holding up two middle fingers. Another taunted her by asking if she would clean up her spit too.
Naturally, this started a huge debate on Twitter.
Many people took sides by retweeting whichever picture suited their beliefs. Some people mocked the tensions, instead taking to parodying the pictures by kneeling next to stars from Danny Devito and Shrek stating "nothing but respect for my president." Mostly, people just wanted to attack both girls.
Remarks such as "Dumb White B*@$^!" and "Vulgar Latina" were thrown around as casually as the memes this event created.
The first girl was criticized for honoring the controversial president, the second girl was criticized for directly attacking her counterpart and approaching the whole thing immaturely, and they were both stated to be the face of what's wrong with this generation.
It's not them that's wrong with this country, it's all of us. They are just demonstrating what we as a whole do best. They were just expressing themselves, but we were the ones who made it viral.
And for all the wrong reasons.
We are the ones who took sides, we are the ones who retweeted each post and replied with a comment about how the other one is wrong. We are the ones who continue to glorify and think one side is "wrong" and defend our own side tooth and nail. But more importantly, we are the ones that are taking into account their races (The pro-Trump happened to be white, while the anti-Trump happened to be Latina), when that has nothing to do over the matter. We are the ones starting unnecessary battles.
Newsflash: There are minority supporters of Trump who voted for him, just as there were white people who voted for Hilary. Political parties, no matter how much you try to believe they are, are not racially exclusive.
Their race should have nothing to do with their actions. Their race should have nothing to do with their beliefs, or our own for that matter, and it's time we start realizing that. The internet tends to ignore that their were POC and white people voting on both sides of the political spectrum, and instead pits races together in order to cause more divisions. That is not the battle we should be fighting.
Both girls were right. Both girls are entitled to their own opinions and have a right to express it by any means necessary. It is not our job, nor are we in any way entitled to, to judge them for it, especially based on their race. Celebrate your freedom of speech, but do not attack someone for using theirs as well.
