Ready, Set, Go.

As I made my schedule for next year, I realized that my time at Michigan State was dwindling down into the next two years. These are supposed to be the best years of our lives and, suddenly, they are half way over.

How does society expect barely legal students to decide what they hope to do with the rest of their lives? If you're like me, you've changed your major three times already, have possibly transferred schools once or twice and finally made the right choice for where you wanted to finish school –MSU, obviously. I went from music to hospitality to English within the span of a year and all for various reasons that, at the time, seemed totally do-able. Now, as I finish tying up the loose ends of sophomore year, I wish I had realized everything so much sooner. The worry and frustration that comes with deciding what your career will be is just the tip of the iceberg.

I had expected the initial reaction of school being done for the summer: happiness and relief. As I moved all of my things back into my house, it finally hit me that my sophomore year was over. It was hard to believe that two years had gone by since high school and that I was two steps closer to a full time job and walking out of the door marked "being a kid." You could say that I had my mid-college crisis as I counted off the friends moving away for internships and all the people that lived too far away to see. My eyes teared up a bit as I realized my Big, who I have come to love and know so well, is also going away for an internship.

No matter how many times my mother tries to reassure me that things will work out and it will be okay, the thought of becoming an alumna of Gamma Phi Beta and graduating from Michigan State University are the two last things I want to be thinking about. I finally found my home away from home that I was looking for, and I finally decided what I actually wanted to do in life (maybe). Now that my life seems to be falling into place, it is going to be all over within two years. That can't be possible?

What I do know is that is time to take a step back and have fun being a kid. They say these years are the best of your entire life. Ready, set, go!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
