Whether it be dead smack in the middle of the semester or right before a new one, everyone constantly thinks about his or her upcoming classes.
From the actual subject to your classmates, all could make a huge impact. One thing that out-rules all is the professor. Having an instructor that is passionate and knows about the subject can make a ginormous difference.
College students across the nation hold Ratemyprofessors.com as their go-to source for advice on their lecturer. While many posts do have their own distinctions, here is why you want to look twice before trusting one’s opinion on this site:
1. It has extensive views of both ends of the spectrum. Either you have the students that live and breathe the class or who only attend on test/exam days. You can often tell which kind of student they are with their writing styles or language, but not 100% of the time.
2. It’s unidentified. The writers evaluating each staff member are completely anonymous. Personally, I would rather trust advice from someone that I know than a random student typing away.
3. Little space little info. When reviewing a professor, you only have a certain amount of characteristics. If something particular happened during the course, you may not be able to fully explain in detail. That could easily be a deal breaker for some.
4. Not everyone posts. Some students could care less about the class once it is over with. Others are too excited to be starting their summer or winter vacations to be worrying about posting an itemized critique on the site.
5. Unfortunately, not all instructors are on there. This website is strictly run from past students that have taken the courses. The student’s that post, may or may not have taken a class from all of the professors that the university upholds. Another reason would be, that they simply just do not choose to. You honestly never know.
For me personally, I tend to look at the convenience of my days with times. I also like to get an honest and real judgment with a person I actually know for results.
However, I must grant and give the site some credit when credit is due:
1. The anonymity can help students be as honest as possible without ruining a relationship.
2. It is free and very easy to find your school and professor.
3. The teachers that generate the most student opinions and students are on there. Often times students in big lecture halls think they are just a name on an attendance sheet. Rate my Professor gives them a chance to be seen and heard.
As the semester approaches quickly, what will you do? Hit the web or go to people you know?
