Rapist Brock Turner: Why Feminism Is Needed

Everyone knows you are as one of the most hated people in society, and there is no escaping that reality.

You might have heard about this one guy, I mean, rapist, Brock Turner, was just released from jail this past Friday, September 2, 2016.

He served only three months in jail from the previous sentence of six months to having the initial sentence to 14 years in federal prison when the trial was first beginning. For the last few years, my feminist awakening has occurred and I have grown absolutely furious in what has happened. Not about him, oh not just that situation, but about the thousands upon thousands of people who have experienced sexual assault or rape. The stories that have been swept under the rug.

Anyone who knows me is aware that I am feminist, I take absolutely no shame in calling myself that. While I have followed this case and story unfold, it has proven why feminism is desperately needed. I understand that a lot of people do not know what feminism is, the meaning behind it, the intersectionality it focuses to encompass, or the lessons we have been forced to learn and now unlearn. The case towards rapist, Brock Turner, proves why feminism must be our forefront voice for sexual assault and rape survivors and their justice, now more than ever. Here's why I personally need it:

I need feminism because Turner got a lenient sentence for the fact he is white while a person of color is serving 15 years to life for the same exact crime right now.

I need feminism because we worried more about his swimming career rather truly holding him accountable for raping an unconscious girl behind a dumpster.

I need feminism because his father believes his son was receiving just "20 minutes of action".

I need feminism because the state of California does not recognize, in law, that rape is a crime, where Turner's trial was held.

I need feminism because we would rather lock someone up for the possession of marijuana, a natural drug that is medically capable of helping a lot of people, for life, rather than a person who rapes, sexually penetrating another human being without clear consent, for only three months.

I need feminism because after listening to a 7,138 word victim impact statement, rapist, Brock Turner, felt no remorse for raping her and being inside her.

I need feminism because we care about the more about the rapist's future than the survivor's current state of being.

I need feminism because we blamed the alcohol for the rape.

I need feminism because his swimming scores were at the bottom of multiple news articles.

I need feminism because there was no verbal consent as rapist, Brock Turner, claims while he was raping her.

I need feminism because Aaron Persky

I need feminism because rape culture.

I need feminism because rape is not sex.

I need feminism because we didn't lock up a rapist for life.

I need feminism because rapist, Brock Turner, demonstrates that rape and sexual assault is not seen as a serious crime within our society.

I won't be quiet about this case. We will hear it for the rest of our lives as part of our U.S History, as we should. Maybe then we will have stronger laws and longer sentences for rapists then the lenient, three effing months.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
