Before I started working in a restaurant, I never gave much thought to restaurant hosts. I just thought of them as the person who seats customers and puts menus down. Let's just say I wish that was all I had to do. We are basically responsible for making sure both the servers and customers are pleased. Clearly, there are a lot of things customers don't understand about being seated since they act like the world starts revolving around them when they visit a restaurant. So, here are a few things your hosts would like you to remember:
1. You're not entitled to any table you want
Especially if you don't have a reservation. Period.
2. The way your food came out has nothing to do with me
I'm not in the kitchen nor did I make your food or take your order.
3. To-go orders take the same amount of time to make
Just because you have a to-go order doesn't mean you are getting faster service...you see the restaurant is busy.
4. We have a system to where we seat people
Unless you have a physical disability or there is a serious space issue, please just sit at the table you were given. Again, especially if you don't have a reservation, you're lucky to have a seat. If you decide to move because you didn't "like" a table, know that you just disadvantaged a server.
5. It takes us a second to set up for a larger party
Sometimes tables are automatically set up for tables of 4. That means if you have any more people than that we have to open up a table for you and it will take a few minutes at most; you can't be starving that much.
6. Yes, there is a long wait time
When there's a long wait, there's simply a long wait and there is nothing I can do about it. Huffing, puffing, and eye-rolling won't change it either. Bye now.
7. If I'm on the phone taking a to-go order, please be patient
If you walk in and you see me already in the middle of taking someone's to-go order on the phone...you have to wait a second.
