For those who are not familiar, actor Randy Quaid and wife Evi, were arrested on October 9th, 2015, after fleeing the United States five years ago for being accused of vandalism to a home in Santa Barbara, California. What you may not know prior to this incident, Randy Quaid claimed he and his wife were being hunted by “Hollywood Star-Whackers” who killed his friends David Carradine and Heath Ledger. There were felony charges for their arrest in 2010 after they were found “squatting in a guesthouse of a home they previously owned”. According to court papers, the Quaids destroyed furniture, a fireplace and a mirror with estimated $5,000 in property damage.
Well, according to ABC News, they were released from the courthouse in St. Albans on October 16th, Vermont by Superior Court Judge Alison Arms. They were initially held on $500,000 bail each but Judge Arms later reduced the bond to $50,000 and then dismissed it completely on Thursday, claiming there was “nebulous California court paperwork” and that she found no probable cause to hold the couple or to extradite them to California as fugitives.
Randy Quaid said outside the courthouse upon release, “I’m glad the judge was fair and she took the time to get her decision correct” and that it’s almost as if somebody understands their situation. But it’s not quite over, the Santa Barbara DA said it is pursuing a governor’s warrant which allows for extradition and expects the Quaids will be taken into custody on the original arrest warrant.
Time will tell if the Quaids are imprisoned again, but for now they are out and free. It begs the question if Randy Quaid’s comment on this group of “Hollywood Star-Whackers” actually holds some relevance as to why him and his wife are under such scrutiny and had to flee the country. It’s not impossible, but kind of hard, to believe that the Quaids were led to flee the country simply on some $5000 vandalism felony in Santa Barbara for five years of their lives.
Who knows? They could be a couple that likes to vandal Santa Barbara homes according to the Police, or they could actually be on the run from some invisible Hollywood Mafiaesque hit group. What is clear though for now is that Judge Arms did not find any reasonable suspicion to keep this couple in custody.
Evi Quaid described it as “profound and real” when she heard the Judge’s ruling. It’s still not over for the Quaids who may still face legal troubles, lets just hope the justice system prevails for the Quaids…or else the “Hollywood Star-Whackers” will get them next! Or not.
