6 Random Food Items Found In A Mexican Household

I never realized how some foods I grew up with are so foreign to those who didn't grow up in the same culture as I did.

Since I don't live at home anymore, I started to reminisce of all the random food/food items that were always in my household or that I would always consume.

Here are some of the ones I thought about:

1. Hot Sauces

Tapatio, Valentina, Porki, Cholula, you name it, we pretty much had one of each in our pantry all day, every day.

2. Mexican Candy

Pulparindos, Duvalin's and Mazapan's... all I can say is YUM YUM YUM!!!

3. "Sweet" Bread

AKA... Pan Dulce

and let's not forget about Gansitos...

4. Hot Chocolate

With that pan dulce, we can't forget to have our mug of hot chocolate, Mexican style.

5. Random Drinks

Jarritos, the Mexican soda pop, which by the way, tastes amazing with authentic Mexican tacos.

and aguas frescas, like Horchata and Agua de Jamaica

6. Other random foods:

Duritos (I love them with tapatio and lime)

Elote con queso, (corn with cheese). Sounds weird to others, but we all know when we would hear the Elotero coming, we were dashing through the front door.

Bolis!!!!!!!! On a hot summer day, having more than one of these was easy to get away with.

and last but not least, these two foods were almost an everyday food in my household, and I know that at least one of these are definitely in most Mexican households as an everyday food.

Nopales AKA Cactus

Yep, I eat cactus, and LOVED it growing up. I know it sounds weird, but it's very normal in Mexican households, and actually quite delicious.

Probably the most common food in a Mexican household is:

Frijoles!!! AKA Beans

Whether it be frijoles de la hoya (regular beans) or firjoles fritos (refried beans), we always have beans on deck in a Mexican household.

Oh, and of course tortillas!!! LOTS OF THEM!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
