A Ramble About Writing

Hey, it's what I like to do.

The Odyssey can sometimes be an unnoticed platform on social media. Facebook scrollers tend to only read articles with catchy titles and typically a numbered list. People are constantly in a rush and do not have the time or patience to read 500 words. I find this upsetting because the lengthy pieces are usually ones written with passion. I have been a writer for the Odyssey for over a year now, and I always write paragraph-long articles when it is about a topic I have a lot to say over. Don’t get me wrong, the numbered lists are funny, relatable, easy to read, and usually a hit. I just wish people would spend more time reading. You can learn a lot, and if you would like, it will improve your writing skills as well.

The more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the more you want to say. What better way to express your thoughts than through a pen? (Or keyboard). Writing can give you a voice if you are too shy or scared to actually speak up. I’m not advocating to hide behind your keyboard, but if you find this method easier, then you should go for it. When something in my life is bothering me, I like to express it through writing, and sometimes though my Odyssey articles. It provides an outlet and a way to let others know how I’m feeling.

Your writing can be an inspiration to others as well. The piece you wrote that was about different ways to stay happy during the day may have really helped someone out. Throughout life, you don’t realize how often a person’s writing affects you. The written word is everywhere, whether on posters over campus or links on your Twitter feed. That being said, there are so many ways to get your voice out there. Many online platforms look for freelance writers. My university’s newspaper allows anyone to write articles for them. If you have a passion for writing, then there really isn’t much stopping you.

I get that this article can’t pertain to everyone. I am extremely jealous of those who are outspoken and great at public speaking. For me, it is easier to organize my thoughts in a written form. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that a typed article can be just as impactful as a public speech. People have different outlets for expression so maybe next time you see a long article on Facebook, take the time to read it. You never know what you might discover.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
