Colorado, Montana, Washington, Utah… All these states are known for their sublime plethora of outdoor activities. As a Colorado native (who has a slight bias towards my own Rocky Mountains), I assumed I would be less than impressed with the outdoor offerings in Southern California. However, the natural landscape in San Diego can be breathtaking if you know where to look (an added bonus is the glorious weather that enables such adventures). Here is a list of 8 outdoor adventures you should attempt during your time in good ole Sun Diego.
1. Three Sisters Falls
Located in Julian (about an hour east of San Diego), Three Sisters Falls features a short yet challenging hike that leads to views of gorgeous waterfalls (hence the name of the trail). It’s a perfect day hike made even more perfect with a slice of Julian’s famous pie afterwards.
2. Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree National Park is located a couple hours to the northeast of San Diego, but the trip is worth the drive. Camping, hiking, and rock-climbing are among the most popular activities to engage in the picturesque desert setting.
3. Cuyamaca Peak
Also located in Julian, Cuyamaca Peak offers an uphill trek that has a pot of gold waiting at the end: breathtaking views. You can see all across the mountains, and if you squint, you can see the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The trail is steep but paved, but there is another back trail that is more challenging for those of you who like adventure.
4. Surfing
Why not fulfill all of your stereotyped Southern California fantasies and try out surfing? There are multiple surf schools in Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Ocean Beach...you name it. In fact, you can even take classes through the Mission Bay Aquatic Center. It’s time to get rid of the insecurities, embrace the SoCal lifestyle, and shred some gnar, bro.
5. Flyboarding
I know, it sounds crazy. However, water powered jet packs are a real phenomenon sweeping across the world. You attach yourself to a board, put on your jet pack, and take it out on the water! Jetpack America services the San Diego area, and despite the cost, it’s definitely an opportunity you should take if you get the chance.
6. Trilogy Sanctuary
For those of you who are looking to get outside but stay clean, Trilogy Sanctuary is an excellent option. They offer aerial yoga, which is essentially yoga that utilizes hammocks in order to get deeper stretches. This is perfect for the day after a long hike or before a long day of beaching. They also have a vegan cafe for post-yoga bites.
