Racism; It’s An Issue And We Need To Fix it.

UND is not the only place that needs to get their act together.

Everywhere you go, you will see some headline referring to some racist issue that is going on in our society today. Currently, UND is taking a lot of heat after a group of students released a photo about locking “the black bi**h out.” In another part of the country, there are protesters gathering in Charlotte to continue protesting the death of Keith Lamont Scott. Somewhere else, people are criticizing and protesting the police officer who shot Terence Crutcher. Black Lives Matter is continuing to demonstrate that racism is real in this country, and they are right about that.

Think about it. There is racism even when we don’t think that there is. Just because it was a part of our history doesn’t mean that it didn’t disappear. We hear all the time about racial slurs or racial differences. Women are paid less than men, and women of color are paid even lesser than that. There are shootings and protests all over the country and quite frankly, nothing is being done about it.

There is racism on college campuses. UND is standing in flames right now after what has gone viral about what students did to an African American student over the weekend. This is ridiculous. At one point I was proud to be attending UND, but how am I supposed to be proud of a school where students treat others like that. If there isn’t a punishment for those students, well, words cannot even express the anger I would have with the University.

I recently read an article for a public health class about racism. Before reading the article, I didn’t realize that even when we think we aren’t being racist, we may be doing something that is racist. We as humans, tend to block out what we don’t want to know or don’t want to see. I think the American culture has developed this idea that we shouldn’t do anything about it because someone else will do it.

Here’s the thing, there is a problem and we need to fix it. Racism is a problem. No one should ever be judged based on the color of their skin, or where they came from. If that was how everyone treated each other, the human population would seize to exist because everyone would fight. Someone needs to take control and make this change.

People are trying to prove that racism is an issue. I believe it. America needs to make some changes or the entire country will go down hill fast. People need to learn how to not be so quick to judge someone, and people DEFINITELY need to learn how to not escalate a situation. Hello America, it’s time to make a change and to see that racism is the serious issue at hand.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
