Quick Tips For Sorority Recruitment

As recruitment season come upon us here's a list of things to remember while going both through recruitment and being an average college student. Things I wish I would've known when I went through recruitment last year. If you remember just these quick little tips it may help you as you gear up to take the best adventure of your life.

1. Breathe.

The first day is really nerve wrecking but just as you are nervous the girls in that sorority is just as nervous. They may have had all summer to prepare but it doesn't stop the pit that forms in the bottom of our stomach as we prepare to welcome you into our home and get to know you.

2. Go To Class.

Recruitment is long nights of meeting many girls and you are going to be exhausted the next day but no matter how much you may think one absence won't hurt you will regret it later. I was lucky enough to not have any 8 a.m. classes but some others aren't so lucky.

3. Be Yourself.

I can't stress how important it is to just be yourself. These girls could possibly be your future sisters. So why not show them who you are now rather than later? Recruitment is about finding your home away from home and it makes it easier to see where you feel at home to just be who you are.

4. Not Every House Is For You.

When I went through recruitment many girls felt terrible if they didn't feel at home in the house that they visited. Not every house will feel like home so you have to figure out where you feel the most comfortable and welcomed to figure out where you will grow best.

5. Ask Questions.

During recruitment you get asked a lot of questions and you may feel overwhelmed. So whenever there is a pause in the conversation ask questions of your own. Some good ones to ask is always there requirements for living in the house, why they chose their sorority, and always ask about what type of payment plans they have.

6. Smile.

Nothing helps ease the nerves more than smiling. Especially the first night when everything is so new and a little overwhelming.

7. Take Notes.

Whether they be mental or you write it down on a notebook. Always try to take some sort of note so you can remember the places you went. When I went through recruitment I was really nervous and had a hard time remembering the names of the houses I visited and what I liked about them.

8.Be Prepared.

This is a big one! Be prepared for anything. Whether it be needing band aids for a blister or a Tide To-Go stick because you got a stain on your shirt while eating dinner. Anything can happen whether you plan for it or not.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
