Every time I mention that I’m a senior, I always get hit with the same line of questions: “What are your plans after graduation?” or “Do you have a job yet?” followed by the various looks of concern and disapproval when I say I don’t have plans yet.
Yes, I know I should start applying for jobs. And I will. But I would also like to enjoy what’s left of my senior year without constantly being bombarded with questions about my impending future. Once I do figure out my plans after graduation, I promise I will tell you. I’ll probably be so excited and relieved that I’ll tell everybody who will listen. But as for now, life would be much easier if everyone could refrain from asking these anxiety-filled questions.
Here it goes, some of the questions we, as seniors, are sick of being asked. Take notes, everybody:
1. Are you ready for the real world?
Nope, still in denial.
2. How’s the job hunt going?
It's... great.
3. Are you going to have to move back in with your parents?
*Stares back blankly, because you know it is definitely a strong possibility.*
4. Have you considered grad school?
I can barely motivate myself to do anything for the rest of this semester; how do you expect me to be motivated for another three YEARS?
5. When do you plan on getting married and settling down?
I don't have time for this.
6. Aren’t your college years supposed to be the best years of your life?
Why are you saying this to me NOW? Why would you even think about asking this to someone
graduating in two months?
7. When will you have to start paying off your student loans?
Thank you so much for reminding me.
8. Is it going to be hard to get a good job right out of college?
I mean, even entry-level positions nowadays are requiring 1 to 3 years of prior experience. Where are we supposed to get this “experience” if we aren’t qualified for anything?
9. What do you plan to do with THAT degree?
Here we go with this again. I don’t know, maybe… get a job?
10. Aren’t you done with school yet?
I get it; I’ve been here forever. But no, obviously not.
11. Where would you like to be in five years?
Okay, I still don’t have a plan after graduating, let alone five years down the road.
12. Why are you wearing sweatpants to the bars?
Uh, because I’m a senior and I can?
13. How much do you really expect to get paid with that degree?
All right, let’s get one thing straight. I didn’t choose this major for the money I would be making… or not be making.
14. Are you worried about finding a job in this economy?
Let's not talk about it.
15. Will you miss college?
Of course! But now it’s time to move on to the next adventure: the “real world.”
Good luck with life, fellow seniors.
