20 Questions Radford Freshmen Have When They Get To Campus
Ashley Duke

Every college freshman has questions about college life and entering the first part of adulthood. These are some common questions an average Radford Freshman like myself has.

1. Where is the best place to eat on or around campus besides the dining halls?

Let's be honest, we aren't always going to want to eat the food in the dining halls and we need good alternatives.

2. How much does it cost to do an average load of laundry?

Not all of us are well versed in how to do laundry and we are a little worried about the cost.

3. What are some items we wouldn't think to bring but should have on campus?

Some of us over-pack and some of us don't pack enough, what are some things we wouldn't think about bringing with us?

4. Is it hard to find and get to and from classes?

I know Radford isn't the largest campus in the world but it's still different for some of us and we really don't want to get lost and confused.

5. How easy is it to get involved in clubs and organizations?

I know I've seen a couple of clubs i'm interested in joining but I want to know if the process of getting involved is easy.

6. Is it better to have your bed raised or lofted?

I want to have as much space as possible in our dorm but I also don't want to fall out of the bed and take a long fall to the floor in my sleep.

7. Do you recommend going to events that your RA hosts?

No one wants to attend something that isn't 'cool'.

8. What are some ways to save and make money on campus?

Gotta have that spending money.

9. What is the best way to organize your studying and make sure everything gets done before class?

We want to have fun but also keep up with our studies and make sure we are retaining the information we are learning as well as getting assignments done on time.

10. Should we have a calendar to keep all of our events, obligations, and engagements organized?

I know I have a planner, but is it easy to keep track of everything?

11. Can we have overnight visitors on campus?

I have friends from other schools as well as a boyfriend back home that would love to come and spend a weekend with me on campus.

12. Where is the best hang-out spot on campus?

We aren't going to want to spend all of our time in a dorm room when there are prime spots on-campus.

13. How easy is it to make friends?

We all are sorta new at this and don't really know many people.

14. What should we expect in our classes?

Are there tough professors? Tough projects and assignments?

15. How do we easily get a job on campus?

Some of us already know how hard it is to get a job in our hometowns, is it even harder on campus?

16. Is it easy to adjust to living in a dorm?

While not all of us have huge bedrooms, we aren't all used to sharing a room.

17. Do some professors assign work over the break?

It's called a break for a reason.

18. Do the dining halls get really crowded?

No one wants to eat when they can't sit down.

19. What are the most popular clubs on campus?

Every campus has clubs that are more involved and advertised on campus than others, what are Radford's most well-known clubs?

20. Is it a good idea to have our parents send us care packages?

Then maybe we don't have to spend a lot of money on snack food and drinks to stock our mini-fridges.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
