13 Questions From A New CofC Freshman

I'm finally a Cougar...now what?

13 Questions From A New CofC Freshman

I've done it! I made it into college, into my dorm, and into my new life as a college student. I've been on the College of Charleston campus for about 2 weeks now, and while I love the hustle and bustle of life in the city and the proud maroon I see on the streets and at the "futbol" games, I can't help but wonder about and be confused by a few things.

1. Do people actually rub the Cougar statue for good luck?

I was told this on each tour of the campus that I took, but not once have I seen anyone approach the statue or even heard any student actually mention this tradition, even in passing.

2. Are there actually ghosts on the 6th floor of Berry?

Because APPARENTLY this building used to be an orphanage, and the sound of children's laughter can commonly be heard on the sixth floor. And I've heard stories of people getting random chills during the night or hearing mysterious banging in the walls. Can the Paranormal Activity Club please come to sort this out?

3. Are there always this many bugs in the Cistern Yard?

I love attending all the events (not to mention the fact that space is GORGEOUS) but it would be nice not to be eaten alive every time.

4. Can all the teachers please take a class on how to use OAKS the same way?

I finally get the hang of it for one class but suddenly the next teacher is like "what if I put this assignment here instead of where everyone else puts it?" Is there a basic formula for how to work on this platform that I should know about?

5. Who organized the inside of the classroom buildings? They should be fired.

I rely on the constant signs to make sure I'm going in the right direction, it's literally a maze throughout each building. And the only rhyme or reason I can find is that the rooms on the first floor start with the number 1, the to on the second start with the number 2, and so on. Other than that, I've got nothing.

6. OK, but what is sustainability?

Let's be honest, we're all asking it.

7. Where do you get breakfast as an early riser on Saturday mornings?

All the dining halls, campus markets, and even Einstein's Bagels are closed! I am a hungry girl and can't keep spending all my Dining Dollars (seriously, it's only been two weeks and I have spent an extraordinary amount, why must Starbucks exist?) before the first month even ends!

8. Where should I go to get the best views of Charleston? Are there any good parking garages for stargazing?

Our campus is beautiful and our city is beautiful, and I want to experience that beauty as much as I can. Plus it makes for some pretty awesome Instagram posts.

9. When's the best time to go to the Chick-Fil-A to avoid the long lines? Same with the mail services.

It's always SOOO crowded, and I have to stand there and really consider what amount of time my lemonade, or my package, is worth.

10. Do your clothes really need an hour in the dryer to get fully dry?

Are the dryers really that bad that they need a full hour, or are they just sitting there baking my clothes as I attempt to do homework?

11. Why are the common student desks so small??? I can't even fit a piece of paper on the surface, let alone my textbook or entire laptop.

I mean, I can't be the only one who has a problem with this! Who thought it was a good idea to make each desk smaller than any sort of study or writing materials we may require. If we were in kindergarten that'd be one thing, since we don't really have that much stuff to be responsible for, but in college, I've got a laptop, a binder, and a whole stack of textbooks just waiting to be used.

12. Can there please be a 24-hour mac and cheese bar in the dining hall?

So this question comes from my roommate, and she's right, you can never go wrong with mac and cheese.

13. Where can I snag some free printing?

Almost all of my classes are requiring me to print something out for every class period, so I feel like I'm going to run out of copies fast.

So those are just some of the interesting things about CofC's campus life that I've wondered about, but all in all my experience here so far has been really positive. I love the people and the lifestyle, and can't wait to see what the future holds.

As long as the ghosts of Berry don't get to me first.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
