21 Real Questions You Ask Before Turning 21
The Kinship Perspective

This past weekend I turned 21 and there have been so many questions that have been running through my head. Now, I know turning 21 is one of those big milestones, but at the same time, it can be one of those things that can be a little daunting. Like graduating college. 21 is one of those birthday's that always ends up being made into a huge deal. Now don't get me wrong, there isn't anything bad about it.

Turning 21 is an awesome thing, I just feel like there are a ton of questions surrounding it because it can sometimes be hyped up. But anyway, here are just a handful of questions that I've been thinking about lately, maybe you've thought about some of these or none of these, but either way here's to turning 21!

1. Am I seriously turning 21?

2. Does this mean I have to be a real adult now?

3. How do I do that exactly?

4. Why do people have to get crazy drunk on their 21st birthday?

5. Is being 21 going to be different than the other years?

6. Do I have to worry about getting carded now?

7. Off of that, does that mean I'm going to have to explain my age?

8. Am I going to feel pressured into drinking with friends?

9. Why does turning 21 come with so many expectations of being a mature and functioning adult?

10. Is there any good way to go about being an adult?

11. What if I completely mess up this whole adult thing?

12. Are there really such great things about being 21?

13. Are people going to view me differently now that I'm 21? Like does 21 bring a different air to a person?

14. I mean I'm never going to be 21 again so I should enjoy it, right?

15. Is 21 going to be my best year?

16. Seriously though what makes turning 21 so different from every other year?

17. Does turning 21 mean I now qualify for jury duty?

18. What else can you do when you're 21?

19. Do I have to wear one of those birthday sashes when I go out?

20. 21, will you please be good to me?

21. What new adventures will this year of 21 bring?

Even with all these questions and a handful of other thoughts that I have about turning 21, I am really excited to be able to embark on this new adventure. Each year holds something new and each birthday brings about a little more wisdom. So whether it be a trip somewhere, or a new friend, or even just a nice night out with my family, turning 21 doesn't have to be all bad or all alcohol infused.

There are so many things that you can do when you reach this new stage in your life. A few articles ago I talked about being able to reach out and take the opportunities that are presented to you because we are so lucky to be able to step out of our comfort zones and travel and experience things in life before we settle down. And with those conversations and me thinking about turning 21, there are so many things that I can't wait to take hold of and experience this year.

From traveling to getting a story published in a book, 21 has some cool things for me in the next couple months and I can't wait to see what comes next. So if you're already 21 or are going to be turning 21, enjoy it from the big things to the little. Take that birthday as a chance to have a fun fresh start and take hold of every adventure you can.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
