I've always liked to play dress up and when I got to high school I developed an interest in doing my hair. In college I developed an interest in doing my make up and doing it well but all those skills don't just magically appear when I decided to be interested. So here are the struggles of someone newly obsessed with cosmetics.
Eye Shadow: I just started figuring out how to put two different colors of eye shadow on at the same time but where the hell is my crease? And what shape is my eye? Does it really matter if the eye shadow is matte?
Eyeliner: Who the hell thought it was a good idea to make winged eyeliner a trend? No one can do that perfectly. It is the source of a lot of stress and quite frankly the bane of my existence. I tried multiple hacks including the spoon, credit card, and tape trick but my eyeliner is still not "on fleek".
Contour: Where does contour go and why is it different from bronzer? Why do we care about the shape of our noses all of the sudden and is there really a right way to contour? Is there are right color of contour for my skin? Is it better to get a contour stick or a contour powder? How do I blend without making the make up disappear? What the hell is baking my face and why do I need to do it? Also, what shape is my face?!
Highlight: Do I need blush if I already have rosy cheeks? Why is it important to have matte foundation if I'm just putting a highlight on top of it? Is there a right highlight for my skin tone? Why is there a concealer version of highlighting and a super shiny version of highlighting? Widen the vocabulary, make a new word for one of them, they are different processes. I think.
Eyebrows: They're never the same. One is always pointer or darker and then there are eyebrow pencils and powders and things that look like mascara and its all very confusing. Then I have to pluck them but don't pluck from the middle and then I can't go outside for a couple hours because I look like a sunburnt raccoon. This is what the world has come to: paying someone to rip off your face hair and make your eyes water. Beauty is pain.
Foundation: Make up is expensive and just barely customizable. Many people mix foundations to get the perfect shade. High end cosmetics are ridiculous, people literally pay hundreds for an average product with a brand name. Different cosmetics work for different types of skin so reviews aren't always reliable. Uneven foundation application is a common complaint. Splotchy coverage with blush and contour is pretty common too but it all looks pretty solid to me so where do I look to see if something is splotchy and uneven on my face? Is the beauty blender really a must have or am I paying for the name again? Replacing them so often sounds expensive just like replacing and washing brushes. It's a lot of matinence too. But fingers provide the previously mentioned "uneven" coverage.
I know that not everyone has these problems and I probably just need to watch more Youtube tutorials but I do what I can for now without all the fancy make up brushes and special products. Maybe someday I'll look like Mykie from Glam and Gore but not this decade. Practice makes perfect.
