I grew up watching "Star Wars," playing with "Star Wars" toys, dressing up like "Star Wars" characters, and laying my head down on "Star Wars" pillows. As a teenager, I learned the "Star Wars" Universal Alphabet and played trivia board games with my Father (I have yet to win). So when the Force Awakens movie came out I was ecstatic. I fangirled so hard over lines like “Is there a garbage shoot, a trash compactor?” Just like everyone else a little part of me died when Kylo Ren recited Anakin’s speech to Amidala, to Han and then plunged his light saber into Han; and just like everyone else I have been left with questions about the two new Jedi’s. I know it has been a while since the release of Force Awakens, but I wanted to take the opportunity to discuss the mysteries left behind by the new edition to the "Star Wars" saga.
The biggest question on everyone’s mind seems the most obvious: who is Rey’s father? There have been arguments for Luke, Han, and even old Ben. So I have gathered information to try to make reasonable arguments. Arguing for Luke is simplistic, the first thing that hit me as maybe too much of a coincidence is her design. The design for Rey is similar the original design for Luke had he been a girl. So did the producers and creative designers decide to let his daughter inherit the would-be look?
There is also the overall plot line of the first story to consider; it is very similar to Luke’s. Both characters were dropped off on a desert planet for their own protection, dragged into war do to a run-in with a rebel droid, and had their mentor killed in front of them by the antagonist Sith Lord they will ultimately have to fight to bring balance to the force. There is also the manner of the family light saber that has been passed down through three generations of Skywalkers, and Ben’s voice (old and new talks to her). Perhaps the old man is still looking out for Luke’s bloodline. She is also a fantastic pilot. Which leads me straight into the next father. Both Luke and Han were excellent pilots, arguably the best two in the galaxy. So both could potentially spawn children that are naturally good pilots. Rey is also the only one that can seemingly understand what Chewy is saying, save for Han. There is also the fact that Han and Leia in the original story line had three children: the eldest, Ben, and twins, a boy and a girl. In the original story line the eldest son turned to the dark side to complete what Darth Vader had begun (so far so good on the name and destiny of at least one child). The boy twin was a pilot in the resistance and died in combat, the sister became a Jedi and fought to restore balance to the force. We are given the opportunity for this possibility with Poe. He has similar features to Rey and is the best pilot in the resistance. There is also the coincidence that the last time we saw a Skywalker set of twins they were involved in a love triangle. Since Star Wars executives have announced that they will be introducing a gay character we could not help but notice the scene between Poe and Finn where Poe told Finn the jacket “suited him” and followed with a casual lip bite.
This scene opens up the possibility for a love triangle, and essentially the possibility for Skywalker twins. The fact that Poe blew up the Starkiller points to the possibility of him being Luke’s son–if Rey can follow a similar plot line to her potential father, so can Poe. Despite all of this evidence pointing towards either Luke or Han there are arguments that Rey could be old Ben’s kid. They are the only two in the entire galaxy with British accents. There is also the argument that every time a Kenobi and a Skywalker fight, a Kenobi wins and she won all but that first run-in with Kylo. She could have heard his voice upon grabbing the light saber because of the blood ties she had to him. If that was the case, though, why would she not have inherited his light saber? There is also the fact that he would have been way too old to have a daughter as young as she is. She would have had to be a great-grand-daughter. He was also very strict about the rules that came with being a Jedi Knight, which included not having romantic relationships. So Ben, being her father, or even related, is highly unlikely. Only time will tell which one of the twins she belongs to, I only hope it does not take too much time. If they are loosely following the plot lines of episodes four to six, though, we should find out in episode eight. Here’s hoping!
Kylo Ren also stirs up questions of his own. Mainly what his true intentions are. Is he following the actions of the Darth Vader under the influence of Emperor Palpatine, hoping to take control of the galaxy, or is he trying to get close to the Sith Lord in order to take him out like Vader did in Episode 6? His commitment is astounding. Just like Ani, he killed the person he loved the most (even if Ani did do it inadvertently, it still happened) to get that extra little boost to push them completely into the dark side of the force. It would be would be splendid if family came together like in Episode 6, and Rey helped Kylo take out Snook. Snook is another question brought about by Kylo’s involvement with him. Is Snook the greatest Sith Lord of all time that trained Palpatine: Darth Plagueis? Palpatine told Anakin that he killed Plagueis, but he also said that Plagueis was so powerful that he could bring loved ones back from the dead. Snook has suspicious looking injuries across is skull, jaw, and cheek. Injuries that should have killed the Sith Lord, however, if he was powerful enough to beat death it would be reasonable to assume that he is Darth Plagueis. So could our dramatic, Gothic, Sith padawan be being trained by Darth Plagueis?
These two Jedi are proving to be forces to be reckoned with. They both show powers that we have only ever seen wielded by Yoda himself; of course, Kylo was trained by a former padawan of the late great Yoda. Unfortunately, we will have to wait a while longer to find out or even get more clues to the questions brought about by the first movie in the new trilogy. Luckily we have a Rouge One to distract us, at least a little, from the wait. I cannot help but wonder, however, if they are working on Episode 8 while filming Rouge One. All we can hope is that they do not leave us with these lingering questions for too much longer.
