For most people who haven't been inked, there are a lot of questions about getting your first tattoo. Will it hurt? Will I like it when I am older? Yes, there are plenty of people in the world who recklessly get tattoos they end up getting removed. The worst fear I have is I will regret my tattoo down the road.
After talking with many tattoo experts -- such as my roommates, who all have real-life tattoos -- and doing a lot of reading on Google, I have come up with all the essential (and somewhat subjective) questions to consider before inking. If you are like me, it is important to consider all outcomes before diving into the marvelous world of tattoos!
1. Can you handle the pain?
All tattoos hurt at least a little. Dealing with the pain is just part of the process; even wikiHow gives ideas on how to deal with the pain of a tattoo.
2. Are you ready to explain this tattoo's significance to everyone you meet for the rest of your life?
A tattoo is proof that in a world of instant, throwaway interactions and consumerism that there is still a need for permanence. Your tattoo was put on your skin to be read and seen -- feel proud about your story and what the tattoo stands for, even if it's simply for aesthetics.
3. Is it stupid?
People get really worried about wanting an original work of art that is in no way clichéd. You can't please everyone, so there is no reason why your sense of self-expression should be shaped by other people's opinions.
4. Is it in a language you don't speak fluently?
Having "chicken noodle soup" written on your arm in Chinese characters may be pretty funny to the people who can read it. If anything, maybe take the opportunity to learn a few things in a new language before getting a permanent phrase on your body.
5. Is it a song lyric?
Of course, our taste in music may change over time, but tattoos based on song lyrics can be really meaningful and beautiful. It is important to pick a lyric you truly love and connect with.
6. Is it your lower back… or your face?
I get that placement is important because the right spot will make your tattoo look its absolute best. Your body, your placement; the choice it up to you.
7. Is it a joint thing with a friend or significant other?
I'm trying not to be cynical about love, just realistic. Love and friendships may not be permanent, but your tattoo is.
8. Will this tattoo look okay when you get old and saggy?
If you are worried about how it will look when you are older, you probably shouldn’t get a tattoo. It will still hold the same significance when you are older -- that doesn't change.
If you answer "yes," "no" or "I don't care" to any of these questions, then you should stop sitting around and go get that tattoo you have always wanted!
