A really good web comic is hard to find. That's not to say that web comics are hard to find. There are literally hundreds probably thousands of web comics internationally, most of them of highly dubious quality. Fortunately, the decent content tends to rise above the dross but, even so, finding a truly engaging and high quality web comic can be daunting.
"Questionable Content" by Jeph Jacques was the first web comic I experienced this with (well, not technically the first, I'd been reading Randall Monroe's "xkcd" for years before hand, but QC was probably the first time I'd found an amazing web comic while actively looking for one). QC is a long running slice of life comic, tinged with sci-i weirdness and the Indie music scene. The comic focuses on Marten, a lovelorn guy, trying to figure out where his life is going; his roommate, Faye, who constantly struggles with her tragic past; and Marten’s snarky, foul-minded robot buddy Pintsize. QC has run since 2003 and, since its debut, its art style has evolved drastically and the cast expanded greatly. More robots have been added (and the history of sentient AI in the comics universe has been fleshed out) and Dora, Fayes boss and the owner of Coffee of Doom, Hannelore who grew up on a space station, and many other characters have been introduced. While the story it tells isn't one that could only be told by a web comic, the way that it does so is uniquely suited to a web comics art form. The scope of the story, its stakes and emotions all grow with the comic itself, the characters and world of the comic evolving, along with Jacques' art style, as he grew more and more skilled at both storytelling and drawing. QC is an incredibly addicting and compelling mix of humor, drama and romance. The journey of all the characters— from Marten finding his place in the word; Dora expanding Coffee of Dooms business; Hannelore learning to live with OC; the growing friendship between Faye and the retired combat robot Bubbles—is deeply engaging and begs the reader to continue. For me "Questionable Content" is the very definition of a great web comic.
