An Open Letter To The Adelphi Lacrosse Team

I don't expect you to agree with me, but can you answer me why should I agree with you?

When I first saw the video with Adelphi’s Men’s lacrosse team running out on the field to an excerpt of Donald Trump’s inauguration speech on Facebook, I felt odd. Not that I didn’t understand what was going on, nor was I feeling faint or intimidated at hearing Trump’s rhetoric as a battle cry, but something about it just felt rather… surreal.

Like, there’s a bunch of white dudes running with lacrosse sticks in hand, probably chanting “AMERICA” in their heads as they hold the star-spangled flag up high, as they let the inauguration speech ring in everyone’s ears before the hype music blasts in.

They all attend the same university as I do; a university where, as far as I know, are chock-full of people who hate, despise, or just plain don’t like President Trump.

Now I’ll give the benefit of the doubt that those men in the Lacrosse team are all well-meaning, harmless individuals that just decided to be all patriotic for their game introduction. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time chastising them for exercising 1st amendment rights.

Instead, I’d like to ask a question: what exactly does making America great again look like?

Because whenever I hear the phrase, whenever the majority of marginalized communities and non-supporters hear that phrase, we wonder how exactly America was great back then. What exactly is the definition of American greatness? What is the cost for the country to be “great”? Money? Denial of facts? Human lives?

Those are the questions I’m afraid not many Trump supporters and sympathizers are able to answer 100% clearly nor logically. To this day I have yet to hear someone say they support Trump without also hearing slivers of patriotism and/or simply unintentional ignorance of the world in their voice...

To everyone that supports Trump, I appreciate that you want to make your country great. I'm sorry for how the majority of you have become economically disenfranchised. I absolutely understand how frustrating politicians are, with many of them saying empty promises and never helping. I know that there's a good amount of you that are not "deplorable".

But as much as it seems that Trump may be the answer, I just want you to ask yourselves: would an elite businessman who's stumbled upon the presidential race really care about the small, middle-class ants below him? Would a true president be so lax about taking away healthcare from millions? Would a real president who says he cares so much about making America great again, go on lavish vacations almost every weekend?

I don't ask you this because I find Trump to be grossly unqualified. I ask you to think because, as Americans, the last thing that should happen to you is to be further cheated by the elite while it abandons you thinking that everything's okay, when in reality, it's anything but.

Now answer me, plain and simple: what does making America great again look like to you?

P.S.: Let me just say that the team is only but a facet of Adelphi's community. I've known and seen people who are conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, moderate, white, black, Latino, Asian, Long Islanders, out-of-staters, internationals. So really, to everyone reading this, and to everyone in the media, don’t take what they did as a defining representation of the University, because it truly isn’t.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
