The debate that has been going on for many years in this country which is better public school or charter schools? I went to a public school from preschool all the way through graduation. I had a very pleasant experience learning in the public school atmosphere.
Public schools get funded by the tax payers of each state and the charter schools mostly are self funded and can choose what kind of students they want to bring in. The biggest downfall with the charter schools is that the state does not control the curriculum in which the students learn from, which could be very costly because some students might not learn all the necessary concepts in Math, English, History, Science, or other important classes. And in some cases, some of the charter schools are not accredited which should raise some major red flags if you are a parent.
Most charter schools require you to pay tuition to be able to go there and most families cannot afford that because it is too expensive. Like I said above, charter schools can pick and choose what students they want to bring in, and that begs the question of whether or not this is a form of discrimination by not accepting all types of students.
I feel that the charter schools have a personal agenda that is maybe not in the best interest of the students. The public school system is cost free and allows any student to enroll. It often provides a good atmosphere for students, teachers, and the administration to have an very diverse group of students.
The educational system in America is about to face new leadership with the appointment of Betsy Devos as Secretary of Education. During the hearing to appoint her she had some very interesting comments regrading funding of public education.
First, Senator Patrick Murray, Democrat from Washington, asked her this question: "Can you commit to us tonight that you will not work to privatize public schools or cut a single penny from public education?" Devos responded by "I look forward, if confirmed, to working with you to talk about how we address the needs of all parents and all students... We acknowledge today that not all schools are working for the students that are assigned to them. I'm hopeful that we can work together to find common ground and ways that we can solve those issues and empower parents to make choices on behalf of their children that are right for them."
Senator Murray responded by saying "I take that as not being willing to commit to not privatizing public schools or cutting money from education." And finally Devos ended with "I guess I wouldn't characterize it in that way." Here is the link to more quotes from Betsy Devos's hearing.
It is very clear that Betsy Devos doesn't have enough experience to run the public education system in American. In my opinion, there's too much to risk in the future development of the younger generation of students. Closer to home, the Detroit Public School System has been in big trouble with low test scores, political feuds, and poor infrastructure in the buildings.
