Why I Chose To Be A Psych Major

Psychology chose me; I didn't choose it.

When it's time to go to college and become an adult, you feel like you need to figure out your next step in life. People tell you to pick a career that will pay well. They also tell you that if you choose a career that you enjoy, it won't feel like a job, it will be fun. So, there are several reasons why I chose to be a psych major.

1. To help people

I didn't really know much going into college and leaving home for the first time, but once I sat myself down, I realized I want to help people. Not in a physical way, though. I wanted to help people mentally.

2. I really like to talk.

So I needed a career I knew wouldn't have an issue with my problem...talking too much. There are only so many careers you can choose from if you enjoy talking all the time. There are even fewer that do not require scripted talking. It might be a little nonsense here and there, but it is mostly meaningful talking.

3. I want my story to be told.

Of course, I don't want to be in the spotlight just telling a crowd of people about my life. I want to take my situation and find some good in it. What I mean by that is I want to help people that are possibly going through something similar to what I went through.

4. The brain is so interesting.

Have you ever sat and wondered why somebody did something? Me too! I was in my high psych class when I fell in love with the brain and why people think certain ways. From the moment I walked into the class, I had fallen in love with psychology.

5. It gives me so many options.

Psychology does not limit you to any one profession. The field itself is so broad. You can counsel, or you can be a social worker. Your choices are far from limited. Psychology gave me a chance to look at all my options. It gave me chance to really dig deep into my life and see where I think my future will go.

6. It pays well.

Psychology is a broad field and, of course, you have to have the right job to get the big money. As a psychologist, you can get paid roughly $72,000 a year, but for me, I want to go bigger. Go big or go home right? So I want a Ph. D. It will take me many years to be a psychiatrist, but it will always provide me with roughly $174,000 a year.

Being a psychiatrist is going to cost me a lot of money for school. Many years of my life will be spent learning about what make people like you tick, but I would and will never regret my decision. Psychology chose me, I didn't choose it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
