As a child growing up in the exciting land of Midwestern suburbia, I was always excited about the Fourth of July. It was the special day in the summer when my parents didn't have to work, and we all celebrated accordingly – with a mixture of backyard barbecues and riverside fireworks. However, the true importance of Independence Day never really sank in until I got a little older. And even now, as college students and adults, most of us do not take this day very seriously. Most people view it as the only day in the summer when they do not have to work, and they either get to relax in the comfort of their homes, or they jet off to the lake with their friends.
Most times, we Americans take what we have for granted. It's easy to take all of this splendor and greatness for granted, really. When you have to wake up early every day just to work until late at night, it's hard to find the energy to appreciate everything we have been given. However, a reminder about why our country is the best country ever might be needed every now and then. So here are five reasons America is the best country ever:
1. Freedom
This is the single most important reason on this list. It is the reason why so many people are attracted to this country and the reason why everyone stays. The list of freedoms that Americans enjoy are endless. You have the freedom to celebrate or not celebrate Independence Day, which is the very day that gave us these freedoms. The options are endless (as long as they are legal).
2. Reputation
Throughout history, there haven't been too many instances that Americans have had to ask for help, whether in war or peace. On the other hand, how many times have we been asked to save other countries? We did not have to be in World War II; we did not have to help Japan get back on their feet after we bombed them; and we certainly do not have to send supplies and food to other countries after a natural disaster has hit. We are the most generous country, including our citizens and the government. Whether it's disaster or war, America always steps up to help. The government and our people are always willing to join together for a cause. Our generosity is one of the many things that Americans take pride in.
3. Pride
Along with our generosity, we Americans have some serious pride in our country. Everyone is proud to wear red, white and blue any day of the week because it represents our country and – more importantly – our freedom. Whether it's pride in our government, our football team or our cars, you can always find someone who is proud of the same things that you are. Indeed, our overwhelming pride in our country is what unites us all together as one group.
4. History
American history is a colorful story, and it is a story that we do not take for granted. Our history starts in 1776, and everything since then has been a wonderful, though sometimes scary, roller coaster ride. America has had its highs and lows, but every American has gotten to experience the same ride together.
5. Opportunities
The American view that life is full of opportunity is what attracts many people to this country. It is a privilege to be able to ask our kids what they want to be when they grow up. This privilege may be what Americans take for granted most. We forget that, many times, children in other countries do not have options and are born into a set life. Americans have the ability to choose what we want to do with our lives and break boundaries. The opportunities are endless; the question is whether or not you want to take advantage of them.
These five reasons serve as a reminder to everyone, even on your lowest days, to not forget where you live and appreciate the things that we sometimes take for granted. So be proud that you were made in America and Happy Independence Day!
