Why I'm Proud To Be Armenian

"Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?" - Adolf Hitler (August 22, 1939)

Why I'm Proud To Be Armenian
Christine Hovsepian

From April 24, 1915-1917 tragedy and injustice struck the Armenian nation as the Ottoman Empire began systematically killing Armenians in what is today known as the Armenian Genocide. Armenian men were massacred or forced to work while women, children, and the elderly were sent on death marches leading to the Syrian Desert. An estimated 1.5 million were killed, villages and churches burned, and countless Armenians forced out of their homeland. Some schools in the United States have textbooks, classes, and even lectures devoted to the genocide yet 101 years later we still don't have the justice we deserve because Turkey continues to deny what is tirelessly proven. In honor and in celebration of each year we've survived and grown to prove to Turkey that we will never fade or give in, I present to you why I'm proud to be Armenian. Whether you're Armenian or not, I encourage you to read this and know that we are still here, still living, still happy, still writing and speaking the language, still carrying on traditions, still growing, still educating, still angry, but most of all we are still unapologetically proud.

Especially Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Cambridge, MA which was voted the second most beautiful church in the Boston area according to the Boston.com.

11. Diaspora

12. Our communities

What are we without each other?

13. Armenian Church Youth Organization of America (ACYOA)

Our youth are extremely important especially with our diaspora. Our youth groups prove that you don't need to be in Armenia to continue the traditions and the culture. If you're between the ages of 13-21+ and you're not already apart of an ACYOA, I suggest you join. It's a great way to network and make lifelong friends. If you're 18+ consider attending senior's Sports Weekend in Boston, MA this May!

14. Armenian Youth Federation (AYF)

AYF is another great way to meet Armenians. As young adults in the Boston area, we are lucky to have so many Armenian organizations available to us.

15. Nazook

I tried to write a little blurb about this but my mouth started to water and I couldn't focus.

34. Our sayings

35. Our writers

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” — William Saroyan

77. Armenian Heritage Park in Boston, MA

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
