Pro: Seeing all your friends you’ve been separated from all summer or break from.
After months apart seeing your friends for the first time is really exciting, especially if your hometowns are far apart. The first time you and all your friends get together after getting back to school is always a good time, and you know you and your #squad are going to have a great semester.
Con: Seeing some people that you would be perfectly content having a permanent break from.
You’re not exactly thrilled to be sitting next to the kid who puked in the hall in front of your room Freshman year, or too jazzed about running into the guy who raised his hand to correct you every time you got a question wrong in your lecture last semester.
Pro: Gives you a reason to buy new stationary or things for your living space
There are few purchases more satisfying than a brand new notebook or planner. Starting a new year with a completely blank notebook is like wiping the slate clean. Room decor is another exciting purchase that the beginning of a new year or semester allows for. Every dorm, apartment, or other living space you move into always needs a little something to feel like home.
Con: Buying books
A purchase most students don’t get quite as pumped about is books for their classes. Whether it’s massive science textbooks, or having to get 28 different novels, it’s never a fun experience, and you never get as much as you paid when you finally sell them back.
Pro: The freedom to create your own schedule
For the most part it’s up to you when you eat, sleep, go to class, and come and go. Being able to have full control over that, after possibly living by your family’s timetable all break, is always convenient.
Con: Back to communal living
I’m not just talking about sharing a room, but sharing bathrooms, and living space with sometimes hundreds of other students depending on how big your dorm is, or if you live in one. This might not be a con for everyone, and I admit, it is fun to be able to just walk out your door, roam the halls and be in your friends room in less than two minutes. The drawbacks of sharing bathrooms with people who may be less than cleanly, and one person with a cold turning your whole building into a quarantined infirmary, are some of the aspects of communal living that are just not appealing.
Pro & Con: A fresh start
A fresh start usually means good things to come, and at the beginning of every semester that’s what feels like is possible. You’re able to start again, new classes, new professors, new schedule, new living situation, everything has the potential to be great. The scary part of all this new stuff, and possibly the con in this is the unknown. Coming into a new year or semester there are somethings you know for sure, but anything new can be a little scary. You’re not 100% sure of how things are going to work, and what’s going to change over the next few months. This not only leaves a little room to worry, but also a lot of room to make things work in your favor, and turn all the fresh starts into positive experiences.
