Okay, fellow college students: Spring Break is upon us. For some people that means absolutely nothing because they’ll be staying home and relaxing. For others, relaxing might be the last thing on their mind as they’re too busy packing for a tropical and warm wonderland – and fantasizing about the hot people they might meet there. Vacation hookups aren’t exactly my forte, but I’ve been in the midst of my fair share. Before officially deciding to start up a spring fling with that cutie from a state you never plan on visiting in the future, consider the pros and cons of doing so.
Pro: There aren’t any strings attached
While being in a relationship can be fun, some people our age tend to lean toward the more casual hookups. That idea can be tricky when trying it with someone who attends the same school as you (and could therefore eventually be unavoidable), so knowing that you’ll likely never see this person again can be appealing. No commitment, no problem.
Con: While it might be casual for you, the other person might become attached
Catching feelings can be hard to avoid, but it should be something to be wary of when hooking up with a stranger. You probably have no idea how this person will behave after the week (or night), so try to be really sure that they’re looking for the same thing that you are, or things could get messy quickly. While you can avoid them when you leave, you can’t for the rest of the time that the two of you are in the same place.
Pro: It probably boosts your self-esteem
This one is pretty self-explanatory. When someone is physically interested in and connects well with another person, that person generally feels pretty good about themselves.
Con: The other person might secretly have a significant other back home
It really sucks to find out that you were the person someone cheated on their girlfriend or boyfriend with. To avoid this, I suggest performing an in-depth background check on them by checking all social media sites and searching their profiles for any signs of a “special” someone.
Pro: It’ll probably be a great story to tell friends (or anyone who will listen) in the future
Regardless of your gender, just about everyone likes to discuss their hookups with their friends. Bonus points if you have pictures of them to show, because I’m sure your friends are dying to see the cutie.
Con: You might be too drunk to totally remember it
This one can be problematic. It can lead to regret for those of us who prefer to have memorable hookups, especially if you weren’t 100 perent sure that you wanted to go through with it when you were sober.
Pro: It’s fun!
Life is meant to be lived. If you’re still sure that you want to move forward with the person you’ve been flirting with for the week after carefully considering the previously mentioned items, then go for it.
Have a great and safe Spring Break, readers!
