My brother, Thomas, is 17 years old, and going on his senior year in high school. His dream is to become a great writer, and after reading this, I think he has a shot at it. He wrote this piece for me in an attempt to persuade me to hire him on as a writer for The Odyssey. His title for it: 'Fire'. I found out, unfortunately, that I could not hire him. I can, though, share his work with the world. So, without further ado, here is proof that my high school brother is a better writer than yours.
"I will be great. That is certain. Why? Because I must. There is an emptiness inside of me that needs to be filled. I've tried filling that emptiness with friends, women, objects, and just about everything else available. Nothing has filled that void. If anything, that desire has gone through Ramadan, starved and desperate for fuel. Nothing has stopped the fire burning through my heart and electrifying my soul, like a lightning bolt on a stormy night. I will not be completely peaceful until I reach the mountaintop, and yell down to anyone and everyone below in triumph.
I was put on this earth to help, influence, and protect others. From human nature and all the greed and wrongdoing that coincides with it. I see through the lies that society has constructed like a fiberglass mirror. I am not blinded by a lifestyle of materialism and sex as so many in my generation are. I do not find happiness or significance in buying and owning things: for happiness never has and never will be through what you own or have, as much as it is about what you do and think.
I sure as Hell don't know everything. Frankly I know very little in the grand scheme of things. But I do know how to use a weapon. That weapon is a pen and paper. Give me that and I'll do more damage then any gun can do. Bullets are lost in time but writing lives on. Murder fills people with fear but wrinting can ignite one person or a whole nation.
Come with me and you will be inspired. Come with me and I will light a fire underneath you, springing you into action. Come with me and you will no longer see time slowly disappearing as the pendulum swings, for time is never lost when doing something worthwhile. Come with me and see what I see. And when you do, you will see that this is my destiny. For if I fail, I will not have only failed myself. I will have failed the millions starving to be reminded of why they were put on this earth.
Come with me
Come with me"
Yep, pretty sure my high school brother is a better writer than yours.
