If you don't want to engage me in class, you can't expect me to engage with you. If you don't come to class and you always send in a guest lecturer to cover your ass, I cannot validate showing up to your class.
If you dismiss everything I say when I attempt to participate, how can you expect me to keep trying?
I already know that you know more than me. You have a Ph.D. You're older. You have a professional job outside of the classroom. But you don't have to prove it to me by talking down to me.
You assign me readings. I complete them. You give me quizzes. I study for them. You ask me questions. I answer them.
I'm trying to show you that I want to be here, that I signed up for your class for a purpose and I plan on doing the best than I can. However, I can't do my job if you don't do yours.
Before you dismiss my comments, think about why I said that. Before you tear apart my paper, think about how you can help me instead of bring me down. And before you decide to not show up for class, think about the fact that you're not keeping your half of the contract.
I am not just a dumb teenager. I am not stupid. I am not half-assing this class.
So don't treat me like I am.
