If you're a student at UW-L, you know the feeling of being the last one in your town. It seems as though every other school in the area goes back to school one to two weeks before we do, which leaves us sitting at home alone with nothing to do. And trust me, I know the feeling of sitting at home alone. It's not a fun feeling. But there are some reasons why sitting alone at home isn't as bad as it seems.
First of all, you take this time for granted. During finals week I could remember thinking that I couldn't wait to just lay in my bed and do absolutely nothing but sleep, eat, and watch Netflix all day long. Yes, this does get pretty boring after a while, but it is ten times better than constantly studying. Plus, winter break is the perfect time to get caught up with your shows on Netflix. Looking for a new series? Trying to finish up a series that you didn't have time for during the semester? That's exactly what winter break is for.
Although academics are probably the last thing you care about right now, winter break is an excellent time to apply for scholarships that you need. There are plenty of scholarships both offered through our university as well as national scholarships. Did you get an awesome GPA this semester and have essay writing skills? It's always worth it to search up some scholarships and apply to them to pass the time this winter break.
Break is also an excellent time to catch up with your family. If you have a grandma that lives twenty minutes away or even just have free time to get dinner with your parents, do it! When you're at college, especially if you're in the dorms, you're constantly surrounded by friends. Use the time you have off to go get ice cream with a sibling, catch a movie with your grandma or go to dinner with your parents. It's something you'll miss when you're back at school and it will definitely make your family member's day.
Finally, break is a time to relax, and make new goals for your upcoming semester. Whether it be academic, relationship, or fitness goals, break is a time for you to reflect and make a change in your life if you need to. I hope you all enjoy the remainder of your winter break!
