The latest craze sweeping the Broadway stage is Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton: An American Musical." This revolutionary (no pun intended) musical blends hip-hop and a history lesson based on an 818-page biography of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Cherow.
The show was nominated for a record breaking 16 Tony awards and won 11 of those categories including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, and Best Actress in a Musical. Miranda and the cast tell the story of the American Revolution, the formation of our country and its bank and, of course, Alexander Hamilton. Tickets to the show have become coveted and extremely pricey. If you're not willing to drop at least $200 on tickets, there is an online lottery that can be found here.
Generally, I prefer to be surprised by a show, so I don't listen to the soundtrack beforehand. Since the possibility of me being able to see this show was considerably slimmer than most I decided to just dive right in. By the second song I was absolutely hooked. The soundtrack has been playing on loop for the past week.
In honor of my new found love for Hamilton, it's unparalleled success, and the announcement Miranda leaving the show in July I decided to chronicle just how one falls in love with "Hamilton."
Here's what it looks like to fall in love with "Hamilton."
Starting the album and realizing it's about to be amazing.
By the middle of the first song, it's clear that this is about to be an awesome journey.
Realizing the harmony on "Me, I loved him" in "Alexander Hamilton."
Uh, oh. What kind of drama are we about to get into? I thought this was a history musical?
Your reaction to "Hamilton," saying: "If you stand for nothing Burr, what will you fall for?"
At this point, you realize that there was so much the history books left out.
Perfectly rapping and performing, "My Shot," after listening to it five times.
"My Shot" quickly becomes the first song of the show that you're completely in love with. It has a super catchy beat and memorably lyrics. Oh, and it just makes you feel like you're on top of the world.
Echoing Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy in "The Schuyler Sisters."
The snaps are absolutely necessary.
Your reaction to the farmer in "Farmer Refuted."
"Oh my god, tear this dude apart."
Throughout all of "Satisfied."
This sounds like it could have been Beyonce's next power ballad. You're so wrapped up in the amazing beat that you don't even realize all the feelings hitting you at once.
Laughing at Washington reprimanding Hamilton all the time.
Washington really is the "father," especially to Hamilton.
Trying to follow along to Lafayette's rap in "Guns and Ships."
Just keep the beat and shout out the 10 words in it that you do know.
Hitting every beat in "Yorktown."
The ultimate battle. You've got specific moves for every part of the song.
Whenever Hamilton roasts Jefferson during the Cabinet battles.
Do you need some ice for those burns, Tommy?
When you get the allusions to classic rap songs.
"Such a blunder, sometimes it makes me wonder, why I even bring the thunder." I see you, Miranda, I see you. (A reference to Grandmaster Flash's "The Message".)
You at Hamilton during "Say No to This."
Oh, no, Hamilton, please don't do it.
Trying not to cry during "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story."
I seriously don't remember crying in US History class. Am I crying? No of course not, it's just -- a twig in my eye.
How you feel about Alexander Hamilton after finishing the soundtrack.
Where was this story when I was trying to memorize all of this for a test?
Learning Lin-Manuel Miranda's story and how Hamilton came to be.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is absolutely amazing.
Trying to explain your obsession.
There's no reasonable explanation.
Following the whole cast on social media and just admiring from afar.
How is it that everyone in the cast is amazing? Is that fair?
When you get a chance to talk about "Hamilton."
Did you say Hamilton?
Finding a friend as obsessed as you are.
You take the melody, I'll take the harmony.
