The Problem With #RelationshipGoals
pbs

Walking down the street or on a college campus, students everywhere will be immersed in their phones not paying attention to their surroundings, missing valuable moments that they did not even realize were there. This all comes down to the fact that social media has become this generation's life. People try to prove the greatness of their relationships by posting these posed pictures in order to get approval from friends and others.

Throughout social media, the #RelationshipGoals is seen between Instagram, Twitter, and other internet sites. These pictures show a variety of relationships. Although there are countless pictures with the same hashtag, some of the most popular include, a boy and girl lying with each other in a "cute" way or a couple doing something cute for one another. This, however, is one picture: one snapshot of these couples' lives. Every relationship has difficulties, and this hashtag trend is focusing on just one good moment a couple might have. Basing one's goal on these snapshots of posed photos only used for media fame is a shame. Nothing is said about the before or after about the pictures, nothing is said about their relationship as a whole, and nothing is said except what is being shown in the picture. People are taking what they see and forming a lifestyle from it. Forming these ideas that these relationships are perfect is an idea that has to be stopped. Anyone can post a picture of anything and have an onlooker view that picture in a certain way or skew that person’s perspective. A picture is worth a thousand words, but which words? Let’s look at one of the #RelationshipGoals recently seen throughout the internet. Three separate pictures put together to create the perfect #RelationshipGoals. The first is a picture of a text message saying, “Check your front porch.” The second is a photo of a present on the porch, and the third is a picture of a beautiful dress in the box with a handwritten note saying, “Beautiful dress for a beautiful girl, I’ll pick you up at 7.” These pictures in themselves are absolutely adorable: I mean, who wouldn’t want that to happen to them? But those pictures do not provide anything else surrounding the story. Maybe the reason this someone left the present on the porch was because earlier in the day the couple got in a huge fight because she saw him texting another girl that he missed her. Or maybe the reason is because last night the girl said something he didn’t agree with and he pushed her around a little. Retweeting or wishing you had this relationship is an absolutely ridiculous thing to say considering you have no idea what the relationship is really like. No idea the before the events of these dramatized #RelationshipGoals. So maybe next time you stumble upon a #RelationshipGoal, take a minute to think if that really is your idea of a perfect relationship.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
