Profiling: noun. Defined as the analysis of a person's characteristics, so as to identify a particular subgroup of people. In short, profiling is taking a large group of people and placing them all into the same category based on the actions of few.
Recently, it is hard to scroll through social media, watch TV, or have conversations with people without hearing profiling issues. Racial profiling, social profiling, and religious profiling: it is all out there today. In today's day and age, millennials are switching gears and actually taking part in standing up for what we believe is right and voicing our opinions. While I do not feel that there is anything wrong with that, there is something wrong with profiling, which seems to be a growing form of ignorance for our nation.
Nothing grinds my gears more than generalizing huge groups of people into small categories. Simply because of the poor actions of few, anyone who also shares that title, race, religion, sex, profession, or social status gets thrown into the same pot.
Especially in the news recently, racial profiling is rampant. While it is understandable that some of the events that occur are infuriating, that still does not mean that all of those who are involved are the same. People on both ends of the spectrum of this are wrong.
Here is an example: for those who believe that all police officers are murderers, simply because some do kill for unjust reasons -- that is ignorant. Likewise, those who think that all African Americans are criminals, simply because a few cause trouble, are also in the wrong.
Because of the hate war going on between police officers and African Americans, people find the need to choose a "side." What good is there in doing so? Either way, innocent people are killed every day. Cops are killed by civilians trying to "justify" lives, and African Americans are killed by cops out of generalizations as well. This has to end.
Profiling does not only affect that situation, though. In other areas of life, such as religion, profiling is a growing conspiracy. People see Muslims and immediately think terrorist. Why? Because there have been some terroristic acts from Muslims? People hear someone proclaim to be a Christian and immediately think that they do not accept those who are different than them. Why? Because some Christians preach hate?
Not all Muslims are terrorists.
Not all Christians are hateful.
Not all cops are murderers.
Not all African Americans are criminals.
Not all whites are racist.
We are all humans.
All types of profiling have to end. The actions of the minority should not define the majority. At the end of every day, each one of us is human. We have the same hearts, and we need to start acting like it. This battle between races, religions, and everything else is all self-induced. No one forced this way of life upon us; we took it upon ourselves to start choosing sides. Let's pick our battles wisely and stop fighting against our own human race.
