In the past couple of months we have seen Kim Kardashian meet with the President on Prison Reform. Now if you remember, I did bash her a little bit talking about how she would only meet with him once but now it seems there is something coming along. It is time that the United States takes drastic measures to reform our old and outdated Prison systems. What does this mean you might ask? Well hear me out!
One major thing that needs to be done is to see why people who are serving years and years for non-violent drug offenses are actually in prison for such a long time. Also another issue is that when people leave the prison system they, most of the time, have no where to go. They do not have any money to fall back on or they do not have friends or family. More money needs to be invested in helping prisoners, who are use to the prison life, adjust or acclimate to the normal life.
Another investment we should put money into is drug rehabilitation for people who have minor drug offenses. This would be a more productive route for people who face those charges than trying to fix their problems in the prison system. The statistics show that most people who leave the prison system actually will become re-offenders. Something needs to be done to help stop this and give people a second chance.
Too much money is being poured in from the Trump Administration and many other Republicans to put people in prison for a long time. That is not the answer to the problem. The answer is that these people are human, and they made a mistake and we, as a society, would be doing them a disservice if we did not invest more of our tax dollars into programs to help them acclimate to life outside of prison.
So, like I stated before, the election is coming up. One of the many topics that are on hand for this election is prison reform. So check the facts on the candidate you are looking at, and see if Prison Reform is one of the topics that they want to bring up if/when they are elected. We have gone too long without Prison reform, and it is time that we take action to fix the problems that have happened in the past.
