Prince was a cultural icon that shifted the world as we knew it. While the tragedy lies in his dying so young, his musical talent and extravagant style will live on forever. We're all familiar with the repeated use of color throughout his 48 albums -- think "Purple Rain" and "Rainbow Children" -- so, in homage to the recently deceased singer/songwriter, I have compiled every color of the rainbow from Prince's unique wardrobe. Prince asks us, "What's your color?" Well, mine is pink, but his is every color of the rainbow.
1. Red.
"Ever dance with the devil in the pale moon light?" --"Batdance"
Prince released his album "Batman" in 1989 for the "Batman" film directed by Tim Burton and Jon Peters. They requested Prince specifically for the film's soundtrack and made no mistakes in doing so. Prince captures an eerie, yet funky mix in his soundtrack, which perfectly accompanies the film's aura.
2. Orange.
"Some days I feel tangerine." --"Tangerine"
Last year, Prince blew fashion trends out of the water by making orange look hip again. He did so flawlessly at the 2015 Grammy Awards presenting the Album of the Year award. Some even say he stole the show -- I would have to agree. What makes this even better is the fact that his favorite meal back in the 1970s was spaghetti and orange juice.
3. Yellow.
"Oh, every day is a yellow day I'm blinded by the daisies in your yard." --"Condition of the Heart"
At 1991 VMAs, Prince performed "Get Off" alongside The New Power Generation in one of his famously controversial outfits. This leopard-esque number left little to the imagination, but most of the audience preferred it that way.
4. Green.
"Don't wait for your neighbor, green eggs and ham..." --"Housequake"
"Housequake" is featured in Prince's ninth album, "Sign 'O' The Times." The album was Prince's first solo album and held three top-hit spots due to its wide variety in music genre. Prince flawlessly incorporated blues, soul, funk, and pop, which really revealed his talent as an artist.
5. Blue.
"You like it in the dark, but I like a blue light." --"Blue Light"
In 2007, Prince performed the Superbowl XLI halftime show. Unlike other artists remembered for nip slips or lip syncing (I'm looking at you, Janet Jackson), Prince is remembered for his brilliance. He performed "Purple Rain" in the pouring rain, strumming his purple guitar and rocking a blue suit. What a stud.
6. Purple.
"I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain." --"Purple Rain"
During his Purple Rain Tour back in 1984, Prince's wardrobe favored -- you guessed it -- purple. The tour lasted for an entire year and debuted all over the States, as well as in Canada. The album is among Prince's best three of all time, featuring the hit tracks "When Doves Cry" and, of course, "Purple Rain."
So, from all of us here at Odyssey: rest in peace, Prince. Now we truly know what it sounds like when doves cry.
