Ever eaten so much food that those tight pants just have to be unbuttoned to let the glorious gut be free? That’s how this presidential election has been, except the pants are still uncomfortable and the food wasn’t that great either.
I have never been in a better (or worse) time in my life for a presidential election. College. The concentrated environment for opinion (or political correctness -- do you see the flip-flop here?). Suddenly my social media went from party and stress posts to essay wars against candidates. Which is great, because that’s how democracy is supposed to work: with the voice of the people.
But oh my, are we all done. The first debate was great with the hype, but by the third, everyone just Snapchatted their way through the torture. Millennials are dumbfounded by this election, and it’s only the beginning for us. The Baby Boomers are on their way out (sorry) and probably used to the drama.
Time to turn this positive, regardless of who is elected.
No more conversation fillers! We can go back to talking about the weather now, instead of mentioning a news title about a candidate that made you smirk. The judgmental glances after stating your political standing will be way less chilly after everyone has voted—or better yet, you won’t have to bring it up at all.
The awkward question “Who are you voting for?” will no longer ruin relationships, because now they may blame you for who’s in office! Okay, not really, and people shouldn’t even determine their relationships off political opinion anyways. There’s this magical phenomenon called agreeing to disagree.
By Christmas, enough time has passed where maybe—just maybe—grandpa won’t ask for your opinion on anything that has to do with the government. That means the family can get along without passive aggressive political slurs... Right?
Look, I could go on and on with the optimism—and hell, we need it—but this presidential election was different for everyone. Some may be upset with the results, or relieved. Some may continue to be just as passionate about the presidency long after there is a new face in the Oval Office. For now, perhaps we should all begin to turn our eyes to the local elections. Oh yeah, that’s right kids, it’s not really over yet! Check out your community drama, too.
Happy voting… I guess?
