The current two-party system in America desperately needs to be reformed. Not only does it exclude many people who do not belong to either the Democratic or Republican party, it severely narrows down voters' options and forces them to vote for the "lesser evil" of the two candidates during elections. Another thing that needs to change is the fact that elections are essentially won by the people with the most money.
What inspired me to write this article is, of course, the upcoming presidential election. Americans are stuck with voting for either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. Yes, people can vote for a third party, but I can say that just like every other election, a third party candidate will have extremely low chances of becoming our new president.
There was recently a political debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump that most people have heard about. You can probably guess that there were no third party candidates, like Jill Stein or Gary Johnson at the debate. This is because those candidates are required to have a certain amount of supporters before they can participate in that debate.
Personally, I find this incredibly frustrating. It is just automatically assumed that if a candidate is not in the Democratic or Republican party, they have absolutely no chance of becoming president and therefore are not even given a chance to promote themselves to potential voters. I myself did not even hear about either of these candidates until recently.
There's also the fact that who is elected is not up to the actual voters. The primary elections are won by the candidates with the most delegates and super-delegates supporting them, not the voters. This in itself makes presidential elections even more corrupt.
On top of that, there is the electoral college. The electoral college chooses which candidate wins at the end of the presidential election. They are not required to choose the candidate that has the most votes from the normal American citizens, which can sometimes mean that even though one candidate may have the most actual votes, those votes can become completely void if the electoral college decides that they have a preference for the other candidate.
Our entire system is messed up. We are either stuck with Hillary Clinton, who constantly changes her political stances and isn't exactly trustworthy, or we are stuck with Donald Trump, an egomaniac, sexist, racist bigot who wants to effectively take away people's rights if they aren't straight, white or male. We all need to do something about the two-party system giving us very few options to choose from, and we need to make extreme changes to the corrupt ways in which presidential elections are run in general.
