Yo, Imma let you finish but…Kanye West had one of the worst MTV acceptance speeches of all time. At the recent MTV music videos, West was awarded the VMA Vangaurd, presented by his bestie, Taylor Swift.
Saying “bro” multiple times is the ideal way to begin a speech and really capture everyone’s attention. West used this technique, and I plan on trying it out for my next class presentation. He told the audience filled with kids to “listen to the kids” who were just screaming. It’s surprising that they continued to scream considering he waited a good 10 minutes before actually speaking at all.
West then proceeded to defend himself for his VMA incidence back in 2009. After Swift graciously gave him the award, he acknowledged for a second how mature that was of her. But he then proceeded dismissing his wrongdoing and focusing on how much it had all affected him. West talked about how he gets booed and people think of him as a bad guy. He has tried to lay low since becoming a father, and I respect him for that. What I don’t respect is how he can act like that whole controversy only affected him. He’s the one that left poor Swift on the stage with the audience booing.
He also said that once the show had been over and days had passed, “the effect that” his little stunt “had on people remained.” He saw that event as monumental when it really was just another thing for the media to talk about.
The best part was probably when he started talking about how stupid award shows were, as he attended an award show. HE said he doesn’t understand how artists come to be recognized for their hard work and then only a few walk a way with a prize. He disregarded the phrase “it’s just an honor to be nominated” and acted like all those who do not win walk away feeling like losers. No, everyone who is even nominated is getting press and recognition for their art. He said the artists are “for the first time in they life be judged on the chopping block and have the opportunity to be considered a loser.” This is not what award shows are about, maybe this is how he feels after he has lost but it is not the intention.
Going with the theme of the Miley-Cyrus hosted show, West revealed that he did, in fact, “roll up a little something” before the show. Thank you, I don’t think they mentioned weed enough during the show.
West went on a completely different tangent about the next generation. When talking about the kids again he said, “we’re not gonna control our kids with brands,” this coming from the father of a daughter who has custom pieces made for her.
West closed the speech by answering the question that was apparently on everyone’s mind…Kanye 2020.
