To Present And Future Freshmen: Advice From My Sister To You

Entering college a year ago I was terrified to say the least; a new place, with new people that was far from home. Coming to school I was so fixated on academics and worrying about my potential workload, that I basically forgot that this was a new beginning for me in every sense of the word. With this new beginning came tons of changes and things I should’ve been prepared for. During my first night out at school while wearing a sweatshirt that read the words “Peace Love Dance,” I began to look around at my peers and think… Oh my god I have freshmen written all over me. Not to mention the house I was in was 100 degrees; definitely not suitable for a sweatshirt unless you want to have a heatstroke. The next day I frantically texted my older sister who by this time graduated from college, to tell her that she didn’t do her job and never warned me about what to expect when I came to school. One year later I can honestly say her tips helped me make it through freshmen year without any more of those horrifying moments that I had my first night of college. Here are 5 tips about college from my sister to you, thanks Brianna.

1.Dress how you feel comfortable.

Honestly you’re going to probably look back on your first college party too and ask yourself, what the hell was I thinking? But just know you don’t need to dress like everyone else you just need to feel comfortable in your own skin. If you compare yourself to those around you it will make you crazy, so don’t. The latest styles aren’t always the greatest ones, so don’t feel obligated to try to fit in and look like everyone else.

2.You’re a strong independent woman, so get your own drink.

My mom has always preached to my sister and I since we were young the importance of keeping an eye on your drink, and that’s why it was no surprise when my sister reminded me of this. It’s a frightening reality that a harmful substance could be slipped into your drink during a night out. Always make sure to keep your drink in your hand at all times, and when it’s not in your hand it should be watched by a friend. If it is left unattended then grab another, better to be safe than sorry.

3.Don’t share your late night munchie food with anyone but your roommate. They will flock like greedy drunk peasants.

I don’t think an explanation is necessary.

4.Socialize, Socialize, Socialize.

This is your time to start fresh! Make as many friends as you can and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. If you embarrass yourself in the process, you’ll have some funny stories to look back on in the future. College should be the best time of your life so live it up and don’t be afraid of having regrets because to be totally honest you probably will.

5.Get your ass up and get to class.

It doesn’t matter if you had a late night of studying or were out partying all night, go to class. Coffee with 3 shots of espresso and jumbo redbulls will be your new best friends so get used to it. You’re not over paying this institution every year for you to skip your classes and sleep instead.

Hope these tips help you as much as they had helped me! Prepare yourself for some crazy memories and shameful moments because that’s what college is all about.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
