August is here, which means it's almost time to move back into our new dorm rooms, apartments, and Greek houses. If you're going into your second year like I am, then you know that preparing for your first year of college is not the same as preparing for your second year. You've become somewhat of a preparation professional, and looking back on the way you got ready last summer, you can't help but laugh a little.
Ordering textbooks
First year:
I need to order every textbook in advance. I wonder if I need the workbook to go with it? I probably need the workbook. Should I buy these books new just in case?
Second year:
I'll probably only use this book once or twice, so do I really need it?
Registering for classes
First year:
I need to be in this class at 9, not 10. Why is this class full already?
Second year:
This class is full? Imma just email my advisor.
Packing
First year:
I need two bottles of shampoo and conditioner, at least three blankets, and all of my shoes. Do I have enough boxes for this? I think I need more boxes for this. I'm going to buy more storage for under the bed.
Second year:
One bottle of soap will last a few weeks. Why did I need so much stuff last year?
Counting down the days until move-in day
First year:
Move-in day is only 12 days away. I need to make sure I'm there bright and early. What else do I need to get done before I leave? I feel like I'm definitely forgetting something.
Second year:
Oh, yeah. I move in next week.
Finding a roommate
First year:
I need to make sure I seem cool. And flexible. I just really hope they like me. I bet I'm annoying them. Do they even like me?
Second year:
My roommate will learn the hard way that I ignore every alarm in the morning.
How you spend your summer
First year:
I have to hang out with all of my friends from high school before I leave.
Second year:
Netflix sounds like a good idea. I'll go out this weekend. Maybe.
Although preparing for your freshman year is quite a memorable experience, it's nice to have a better grasp on what you're getting into by the time your second year rolls around. Now, we just have to work on avoiding the sophomore slump.
