I'm certain that, by now, you have all read the headlines featuring the tragedy that has taken place in the city of Orlando this past weekend. Having been in Orlando for part of the weekend made these events even more real to me.
Friday night, I was shaken by the news that a mile from where I was staying Christina Grimmie was shot. The next night, word broke of the Orlando shooting, where 49 individuals were killed in an act of hate and terror. I sat in bed Saturday night trying to wrap my brain around the fact that 50 innocent lives were taken. My heart broke not only for the families that had lost loved ones, but also for our world. I laid in bed, staring at the ceiling trying to grasp how someone could willingly take the life of another human being. Needless to say I received very little sleep and still can not comprehend why.
After struggling to understand, I attributed the thoughtless murders to the evil that plagues our world. As I scrolled through twitter, I saw a number of people post of how we need less hate and more love. I completely agree. The world does need less hate and more love.
I began to wonder does the world truly understand love? I know that we understand superficial love, but do we comprehend real love? It hurts me to say this, but I don't believe that we do. If we did would we really use these tragedies to push our own political agendas? I understand that major events like those that have taken place stir up change. I'm not saying that there shouldn't be changes made. I understand we live in the United States of America and that everyone has a right to their own opinion. I'm just wondering, if we are truly concerned about showing love, is now really the time to be bantering back and forth on Twitter about your personal beliefs? Or would love be better displayed by setting aside your personal opinions and extending a hand to those who are grieving during this horrible time?
John 15:13 There is no greater love than to lay down ones life for one's friend.
