The Power Of Makeup

Why we need to put an end to the makeup shaming.

Makeup has become one of the most talked about subjects in the past year. From makeup tutorials on YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest, to monthly subscriptions like Ipsy and Birchbox, you can't go anywhere without hearing about it or seeing it. Oddly enough, it has become a controversial topic as well. A lot of people feel the need to voice their concern about others wearing too much makeup and if you have seen those rude before and after photo memes you will see comments that say “girls are tricking men into thinking that they are pretty” or "I am having trust issues." First of all, I am sorry if you believe that my eyelids are naturally a shimmery gold. They aren't, and that palette cost me $49. I hate seeing comments, like I mentioned above, all over the Internet. I also dislike the people who think they are better than others because they do not wear makeup, as if that makes them superior or something.

Makeup shaming is not funny and should not even be done. It is hateful and mean. I believe that being able to do your makeup is an art and a way for people to express themselves and to show their individuality and uniqueness. I think this type of art brings makeup users together because we learn from one another. I say “makeup users” because not just woman where makeup and I am loving that men are also breaking that boundary that only woman get to where it. I see more and more men on the Internet making how-to videos and showing off their creativity and they are so talented!

I think what people have to understand is that true beauty is not what is on the outside; it is what is on the inside. For some, makeup is just a fun hobby and for others, it helps them to feel secure and that is okay and nothing to be ashamed of. I think true beauty is having a great personality and the way someone carries themselves. A quote that I just recently heard from singer David Archuleta really resonated with me. He said, "a girl stands out when she radiates light." I believe that anyone, no matter what and who they are, can radiate that light that is inside them, for we have that strength within us. Yes, makeup enhances our features, but I think it is our soul that speaks for what is really beautiful.

Do not feel like you need to conform to society's standards of beauty and do not feel pressured to be something that you are not. Be confident in who you are and express yourself, your true self! So wing your eyeliner, curl your lashes, put on some red lipstick and conquer the world.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
