Earth is dying. A hard pill to swallow, but it's true. In the future will humans have to travel through space to find elsewhere to live? Who knows, but new research conducted by the University of Southern California give us hope that there could be water still on Mars. In some deep ground streams could potentially become active creating streams in some areas on Mars.
Researchers in a 2018 study supported by the Italian space agency detected potential deep water lakes on Mars under its south polar ice caps. This suggests that some of the deep groundwater could still be active on Mars, and could originate surface streams in the near-equatorial areas on Mars. These researchers have determined that the groundwater most likely exists in a broader geographical area than just the poles in mars and that these systems exist around 750 meters under the surface of Mars.
These researchers concluded that some of the fractures in some of Mar's craters enabled water springs to rise up to the surface which resulted in pressure deep below. Theses springs then leaked onto the surface which generated a sharp and distinct linear features that were found on the walls of the craters. The study they conducted suggest that "groundwater might be deeper than previously thought in areas where such streams are observed on Mars. The findings suggest that the exposed part of these ground fractures associated with these springs as the primary location candidates to explore Mars' habitability." Because of the depth these groundwater springs are located at these scientist proposed a new probing method to study the fractures. These new findings also show that Mar's and earth has a similar evolution.
The problem that this article is highlighting in my opinion is kind of shadowed, I think the problem that this article is highlighting is that we have to look elsewhere for future habitat because our earth is going through detrimental changes. This article however, does propose a solution as well. The scientists in this study claim that by understand the changing climate on Mar's it can help us to understand earth better because the planets are so similar. One scientist states that "Understanding how groundwater has formed on Mars, where it is today and how it is moving helps us constrain ambiguities on the evolution of climatic conditions on Mars for the last three billion years and how these conditions formed this groundwater system. It helps us to understand the similarities to our own planet and if we are going through the same climate evolution and the same path that Mars is going. Understanding Mars' evolution is crucial for understanding our own Earth's long-term evolution and groundwater is a key element in this process." Hopefully by better understand Mar's we can start to better understand our own planet.
The audience for this article I think is everyone. A majority of people have been keeping up with the Mar's experiments via daily news, and this article is another piece of information about the planets atmosphere. The audience should care about this article because it could be a future solution to our planets problems. It could either show us that we will one day be able to live in mars, or it will help us to better understand our own planet and ways that we can help it. Overall, it is a very important article covering many important issues going on in our world today.
