Post-Thanksgiving Break Tips

Hey everyone! Hope your Thanksgiving was memorable. Hopefully it was filled with friends, family, fun, and all of the typical Thanksgiving things. Hopefully you scored some great Black Friday deals, got the majority of your Christmas shopping done, and even studied a bit in your downtime. What’s that? No, you were on break, and you didn’t study at all? Me too, friends, me too. That’s why I’ve got some reminders for you guys to keep in mind in the next few weeks.

These last weeks matter!

These next two weeks, I’ve got four exams and an eight-ten page essay (MLA format, Times New Roman 12 point font, double spaced, you know the drill) to do. If you think I’m getting that done by watching Netflix and playing Fallout, then this is an important reminder for you. Don’t let bellies full of leftover turkey (or, if you don’t eat meat, tofurkey) make you think that this is going to be easy. Those finals are going to be hard, but I believe in you. Study, write, and study some more in order to make sure that you pass those exams with flying colors. Take advantage of the library, which will be open for extended hours during finals week and reading days. The last day of classes is December 4, but you might be here until December 14 with finals. The library is open until the last exam is over. Take advantage of it. If this all seems stressful, just remember that…

It’s important to study, but it’s also important to take a breather.

Like I said, you can’t spend all the time when you should be studying for finals playing video games or watching Netflix, but you can definitely treat yourself after hours of studying. Research shows that spending too long studying can be detrimental to retention of what you just spend all that time doing. Don’t waste all of that work! Take a break and decompress. Watch your favorite movie with friends who also need to take a break. Read a chapter of the book you wanted to finish this semester. Go to Applebee’s and enjoy half apps. As long as you use this time as a break from studying, rather than as an excuse to not study, you’ll do great! And even if you don’t, the most important thing to keep in mind is this:

You’re almost there.

Has this semester been the worst ever? Did you just not get the things done that you needed to get done, or fall a little (or a lot) behind in a class, or just not have the fabulous semester you’d hoped for? Well, I’ve got great news for you: we’ve got two weeks left, and then it’s over. Whether you’re graduating this semester (good luck in the real world!), coming back in the spring (can’t wait to see you all again), or even if you’ve decided this whole college thing isn’t for you (that’s 100% okay!), you’ve got two weeks left of studying before a month (or more) of not having to deal with any of this whole “academia” thing that everyone is so hung up on. And two weeks? That’s a cakewalk. You can do that, no doubt. I have the utmost faith in you. You’re gonna ace those finals, turn in all your papers on time, and have a fantastic break. Keep a healthy balance between studying and decompressing, and you’ll be fine.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
